From what I can gather he is head of department: environment affairs and development planning. I can't find anything recent regarding rugby other than he is "unrepentant" and "did it for pride".

I saw the match and was sitting near to where the incident actually happened = not more than 30 meters away.   The reffing that day was a disaster and the longer the game went on the more incensed the crowd became.

Nobody can justify what actually happened -  but walking off the field after the match somebody went to the police who arrested Van Zyl and said  loudly that he would contribute to cover the legal cost of Van Zyl .   People streamed to him and said they would too and provided contact details to him.

The real advantage of what happened was that the idiot who reffed  the game never refereed another test  after that one.

Ou Maaik, apart from the shameful fact that you think it's a good thing that a referee's career might be ended in such disgraceful fashion, you're also completely wrong. That test match was in 2002 and Dave McHugh reffed in the 2003 RWC.

The last 4 words is your interpretation of what Mike said.

Rooinek definitely not - read what I say carefully - I never condone what Van Zyl did.   However, McHugh was a shit referee with a long history of poor reffing.  That type of referee should nt be used - it is a disgrace to what is expeted from a referee.

Thanks for mentioning he played a role as ref in the 2003 WC - I did not know that and do not care.   I did not watch the 2003 WC matches since the SA squad was so shit poor.

I’m not 100% sure but I seem to recall that McHugh’s shoulder injury was actually caused by one of the players falling on him in the scuffle that followed. Be that as it may...... from the NZ Herald in 2016: McHugh continued to referee test matches for another two years until he announced his retirement in 2004, having taken charge of 29 tests. He's currently the Referee Development & Coaching Manager at the Irish Rugby Union. But. That’s not where it ended. He was eventually fired by the IRFU in 2017. He then sued them and got a temporary injunction but when the case returned the court was told that the parties have resolved the mater and that it could be struck off.

"The last 4 words is your interpretation of what Mike said."
No, that is just plain wrong. The last four words of that sentence don't interpret or even reference ou Maaik at all, they refer to a rugby referee's career being ended by a disgraceful and thuggish act . . . hypothetically of course because ou Maaik was wrong about that being McHugh's last test match.
Look Draad, I realise by now that your eyes will have glazed over and a puddle of drool will be forming on the desk under your chin as your puny little brain goes into overdrive trying to process that last sentence, but you bring this on yourself and your brain will continue hurting as long as you try to put what I say into your own words.
Some time ago I accepted the fact that you are not intelligent enough to understand anything that I'm stupid enough to tell you . . . it's about time you accepted that as well.

Rooinek

I have seen terrible referees being used in tests - but McHugh was one of the worst ever,  My indication was merely he should have not reffed anything bar perhaps a primary school team.

I do not wish any referee or player to be injured - but I would also not l ike to see games spoilt by incompetent referees.

Maaik, that went completely over his head. Even after I quoted the key parts. He's hell bent on the "narative ". Probably didn't even read the article posted by Owen....but I'm the one who doesn't understand "whoosh".

Go figure...probably a lot of other things he doesn't know he doesn't understand either.

Sharkbok, you can't select the text and paste it into Google translate unfortunately but there's an even easier solution.
Right click on any of the the text of the article and then select "Translate into English".
There's quite a bit lost in the translation (like "he also awarded a penalty against us after a crap on Tana Umaga" but you should get the gist of it and it's a grand total of two clicks.

Well the man was clearly passionate about his team ... and being robbed like that can be upsetting.

He had a valid reason for squashing that fool ... the incompetent ref wasn't allowed to get away with cheating

We don't need morons like that determining the outcome of matches.

Gooooooooooooooo Pieter ...

There are 2 sides to this story. I was actually living in Dublin, Ireland at the time.
It was a bit embarrassing for SA as a country with a reputation for violence, not even a referee is safe.
On the other side of the coin it was also pretty funny. Old Pieter was so pissed he couldn't even tackle the referee, then Mccaw threw Pieter on the ground, and the referee took a tumble along with him. Next thing the scrum collapsed on top of both them.
As for his refereeing, he was annoying. He was acting overly pedantic, and seemed to have an attitude against the Boks. The Boks had taken the upper hand in the game, but the ref was keeping the All Blacks in it.
One incident that I remember was an All Black lineout, where the ball never even went 2 metres, and an all black player appeared to cheat. (instead of having to go 5 metres- this is a very basic rule that anyone who has played rugby in school would have learnt)

Attacking the ref is not the answer. It sends a terrible message to those considering the job. That said, there needs to be an evaluation of the performances of refs, that's the responsibility of World Rugby's referee panel. If standards are not met, this is the kind of frustration that can manifest. Overall, Piet's little outburst was embarrassing. At that time I was in England, and it was often said that the Boks and their fans were boorish hooligans. The Boks during this period were portrayed as the premier thugs of world rugby. It took many years to rid the brand of that image.

Yes, that was an unfortunate incident. Bad refs should preferably be dealt with a tad more humanely.

No I don't think so.

That ref had it coming. He was cheating ... blatantly ... he thought he was untouchable ... and enjoyed listening to the crowd complaining and bitching ... baying for his blood ... he dared a response from them and went off whimpering when he got it.

Just another loudmouth bully ... a simple backhand and suddenly he's feeling all tearful ... all sorry for himself..

I wasn't embarrassed at all by the incident. Many of us wanted to do the same thing. I was disappointed that Piet didn't ge t a few good opstoppers in ... instead he fell over himself. That embarrassed me more than his intended assault..

The world of rugby is better without that butt wipe.
