Lets hope Meyer is honest with himself and concedes that some of his experiments have flopped. None more so than Fourie at 13 who has left the Boks with no attacking clout out wide.

The team I would select would be:

15. Willie 14. JP 13. JJ 12. Jean 11. Habana 10. Lambie 9. du Preez 1. Beast 2. Bismark 3. Coenie 4. Etzebeth 5. Flip 6. Kolisi 7. Alberts 8. Vermeulen

16. Strauss 17. Steenkamp 18. Adriaanse 19. Steph du Toit 20. Coetzee 21. Pienaar 22. Goosen 23. Serfontein

If I was Phillipe Saint-Andre and I see HM selecting Upright Engelbrecht at 13, I would pick Mathieu Bastereaud at 13 and have a field day.

This moron Ceradyne cannot open his eyes or better still cannot undertand that he constantly makes an as of himself.

I would like to see the above team of yours take the field against the French - but that is highly unlikely to happen.   Meyer would not pick Du Toit for the bench - he will persist with today's lock combination.   He is likely to play Steyn - despite the good game Lambie had.  And obviously Fourie at 13.

Meyer would praise Botha to high heaven for his excellent game today  - how physcal he was - because it is expected from forwards to miss tackles.   And why should a number 4 lock expect to succeed in line-outs?     If he selects Botha again after todays match - he would be as nuts as some of the members of this site are.

If you think that your buddy Upright Engelbrecht is going to stop Bastereaud you are even thicker that I thought. He is one of those players that you do not want to tackle high, like Engelbrecht does.

Yeah Mike, Vlag is one of those irritating twats that has to take a contrary view to everything. Never has anything insightful to say, is just an annoying prick from the SS site. I enjoy debating rugby with some, but not with this ignorant twit.

As for conservative Meyer, of course he is going to select Fourie at 13, Morne at 10 and anyones guess at 3...............Meyer's selection will result in a loss against France

Vlagtwat, if JJ can contain the best side in the game, then chances are he will have a field day with the useless fat predictable Bastereaud. Imagine the poor fat guy trying to defend against JJ's speed and feet......it would be like facing a prop every time he had the ball in hand.

But you are too thick to comprehend this very fact. The French are not stupid enough to play the fat man these days when they have Fritz, Fofana and the new 19 year old......the best fat man can do is bench duty for the French second string side that played yesterday.

Wake up you thick plank..............go get back into your wagon Dutchie

Saffex

Don't try and debate anything with the Ceradyne arsewipe.  H e knows shit about rugby in any event.  Remember it is he who think that French and English club rugby is way above Super 15 and that performance on that level justify players for test selection and that Morne Steyn is the best thing ever to happen to Springbok rugby.

Do you really think that Meyer will not persist with Botha at lock?   I think he will despite all the negatives - Meyer always do the impossible and try and get away with it

And then we have Fourie - Fofana will think Christmas came early this year - he will run past Fourie as if he is not there.

Ahhhhh Ou Poepol tries his luck  again. Where and when did I say that French en English club rugby is way above Super 15?

You are finding yourself in a catch 22 situation here. My argument is about JJ Engelbrecht and I am questioning his defence. Saffex thinks JJ's defence is solid like the Great Wall of China and you have always disagreed with him. Now you have a problem here. I also agree about Upright Engelbrecht's poor defence. Man that has to be frustrating for you.

if I have a choice between do-nothing-on-attack and be-beaten-by-speed-in-defence Fourie - I would rather choose Engelbreht than the useless carthorse Fourie - who basically triers to do something - but manage to knock on balls and give away penalties - my choice will be Engelbrecht.  At least he knows how to beat a tackle now and again.

As usual, Fourie played “very badly” … but only cause Stupid wants the useless JJ selected.

We saw the "plodding" Jaque Fourie keep pace with Maitland, who is no slacker … so speed is not an issue as first stated. We saw his defensive capabilities out match that of “Upright JJ” … keeping the Scots scoreless.

He had a much better match ... as anticipated. A keeper for the coming WC.

What we reaffirmed this weekend is that DumbMike and Stupid Dave haven’t the foggiest clue but strangely enough have the most to say. Like banging on an empty steel drum … lots of noise but no substance.

Week in and week out they end up being made fools of. It's just so damn easy.

Keep up the thumb sucking, Mike ... we've gotten used to this as part of every one of your posts. It wouldn't be the same without it.

Keep hallucinating, Stupid ... we've come to know this as your best quality.

I am not prejudiced - I looked objectively at the game on Saturday and saw nothing of any substance in the performance of Fourie.   His tackles were bog ordinary - his ball skills below par and he showed nothing in attack.

What did he show during the game?   Give him credit for the tackles made - but is that all we expect from a 13?   Look I am the first one who wrote on this site about questions about Englebrecht's defence.   I was also pointing out that his technique is not right.

However, from what I have seen in the past two tests - Fourie did nothing to warrant his inclusion in the team.   He is perhaps better than Engelbecht in defence - but he has shown zilch in attacking play.

Would rather have a completely different 13 - since there are question marks about both Fourie and Engelbrecht - and hope that Super 15 next year will produce some talent that would be b etter than the present two in the squad.

Yes of course your not, Dumber!!

How could I ever even suggest it?

He was supposed to be slow, wasn't he Dumber? You based your entire argument on that. Then he went and kept pace with Maitland. Out the window goes your argument ... so what now?

Aaaaaaaah ... it's his attacking that lacks substance. Silly me!! I must have missed that post of yours.

Whatever ... Dumber!!

Saff, that is actually a pretty good side. Unfortunately Du Preez will not be available for this game, so I guess that means we'll be starting with Pienaar. Vermaak has now been included in the squad, hopefully he'll take Pienaar's place in the starting line-up, although I know that won't happen. With F Louw out Kolisi will get his shot at a start.
We know M Steyn will be starting and Lambie will be on the bench, but I'd also like to see Goosen in the mix. But there are still another two years before the WC, so enough time for Goosen to make his mark, I guess he can wait.

Please - my latest comments did not mention anything about his speed at all - it referred to other aspects of play of Fourie.   Why are you so thick - make counter-arguments plank -- that is a basis for debate.   Not personal attacks - will get you nowhere.

Ok - so the ball got kick behind the Scots line  and Fourie was  already at speed.   Maitland had to turn around and start running towards the Scottish try line - as a result lost a few meters on Fourie and caught up with Fourie.   No pace running in this case in evidence since the full back was covering the ball in any event - more like a trot - not a gallop.  Put them in a race to the ball - where a try is to be scored by Fourie and Maitland had to run to prevent it - I will give over 30 meters Fourie a 3 meter start and Maitland in such a case would beat him by at least 3 meters.

In any event - that is not the issue here - what is is the comments on the 13 position - and don't react like a plank.

Jacque Fourie has lost some serious pace, he was quick back in 2003 but over hear gradually lost his pace. In 2009 his power more than his pace help him back then to break tackles, but now he is just to slow and clumsy.
You simply can't coach pace.
JJ has it

I don't know what game you watched but he was clearly beaten by Maitland, he wasn't just keeping up, he was at least two lengths behind him.
His chase from a Lambie grubber was way of the pace where he ended up clattering clumsily into a player and just getting to the ball after dislodging it.
When he did end up getting the ball he tended to run side ways taking up Habana's space, passing him the ball with hardly any room to move. In contrast, JJ managed to run out and in against the AB's, beating his man with pace and creating the space for Habana to run onto the ball.

We have not played France for some time ...the last time I think at Newlands which we won quite easily but that was some time ago.

This game must be taken as most serious...the one where we are most vulnerable...our record in France is not impressive...the slightest inbalance in the side and we're in trouble...the Les Bleus forwards are tops and their backline is good...Fofana is a potent weapon, Tales and Parra an awesome pair.

Not very clever to compare the speed of Fourie with that of Engelbrecht.   Engelbrecht will outpace Fourie by 15 meters in a 50 meter race.    Better stick with the defence issue - on the speed issue you are on very shaky ground.

I do know JJ is quicker than Fourie but I think you getting a little silly about how slow you think Fourie is. I think you will be surprised.

Fourie is a lot like JP..They dont look fast but you notice how fast they really are when they are chasing someone you believed was super fast. They are just tall, upright runners with high knee action so they look lazy in their gliding action.

From memory, Fury and Maitland were half a step apart at the outset. Fury closed up to even after about 15 metres, after which the wing opened up a metre.....exactly what one would expect.
As for JJ, he looked like little boy lost again. A Bok was tackled at his feet and the poor lad's attempt to protect the ball would have made the Costa Concordia captain look like a hero. Contact is not his thing.

Sharkbok

I have seen Fourie and Pieteren played many times - also In England, Scotland, France and Australia - and if there is one thing they are not and that is speedy.    Pietersen is a strong runner with ball in hand and he has enough speed to follow up balls  like the kick of Le Roux - provided he has a march on opposition players like happened on Satirday.

Fourie was never a speedy player - but like Pieteren a strong runner with ball in hand.  Against Wales he seemed completely outpaced by Davies and was slower than he used to be.     That is no surprise since he is on the wrong side of 30 as a rugby player.  You may respond by pointing to De Villiers and Habana, but speedwise they were always faster than Fourie and as Jean pointed out - he trains harder now then three years ago - merely to ensure that he maintains the same level of fitness than he had three years ago.

Talking about Engelbrecht - I read on a website once that he clocks 10,4 second for 100 meters - which is very quick - but could not find the site when I looked for it again.  On the official website they refer to him as fast.    I doubt if Fourie Is anywhere near that speed - even with his long strides and high knee action.

Ja, Fourie was brilliant............its been all of 7 m gained in 2 tests, with ZERO defenders beaten and ZERO clean breaks made.......not to mention the two turnovers he conceded by knocking the ball on...............and you clowns think this is our answer at 13.

JJ in his quietest game all year was never this quiet..............its a JOKE.

But best of all is Moz's new found love for Fourie.......that is the biggest joke of all. He has been Fourie's biggest basher over the years and now we have him praising those two pathetic performances.

Imagine if JJ had gained all of 7m in two tests, one of which was against a depleted Scottish side and not a single defender beaten........the hypocrisy has no limits here.

I watched your try of the year for 2012 video which you posted.  Balls - Fourie never played for the Springboks in 2012 - neither did they play Wales in 2012.   It is probably a game played in 2008 or before  - because it looks to me like it was Monty that made the kick followed up by Fourie.

So get your facts straight - we are talking of 2013 - not 2008 - sheister.  I do not know who the opposition was and frankly do not care.   And Fourie was slow as a carthorse against Wales and no faster against Scotland.

I think you are referring to the Barrett try - where Morne slapped Barrett on his back wishing him well on his way  to score a try instead of making a half-decent attempt to tackle him..

I accept that Engelbrecht is partly to blame for that try - but Morne is also partly to blame and he made so many fuck ups before then leading to two  tries for the AB's, as a result of which that try became a crucial one.

Now that is a sudden change of heart. Not too long ago you were of the opinion that MS was responsible for the balls-up. Now you have Upright sharing the responsibility. Upright was, however, the one who had both hands on him but instead of taking him down properly like JF was doing this weekend, he decided to do the tango with him. Maybe I should change his  name from Upright Engelbrecht to Tango Engelbrecht.

That was not what I said. I have never once said that MS and JDV played no part. I said that Tango was the one who had both hands on him, i.e. the best opportunity to take him  down. Unfortunately for him and because of his Arthur Murray moves he forgot that he was on a rugby field and not the ballroom..... Are you going to tell me that because he broke through in the first place that it was perfectly fine for Tango to stand aside and usher him through on his way to the try-line? It is, after all, tango's defensive deficiencies, as your gabba Maaikie likes to describe it, that is under discussion here.
