Well worth the R50. Some cool memorabilia, lots of video footage. Got goose bumps watching the final movie - was ready to go play 80 mins
Downstairs they have life-size motion capture video game simulations to play where you can perform kicks for poles, pass the ball trying to hit moving targets, do a workout routine, test your reflexes etc. Pretty cool - kids loved that.
A quote on a display from an early player of the game in Cape Town which I thought was pretty cool:
"They stamped upon me where I lay,
how could I rise and kick away?
Methought, "This is but grewsome play!"
A dozen fellows upon me lay
They almost crushed me into clay
Mauliana ! "
The museum had this to say on the display about the Bok / AB rivalry:
"The arch enemy of South African rugby has always been the All Blacks. It is arguably the fiercest rugby rivalry on the planet, one that has continued for nearly a century. Every time they play each other, South Africa grinds to a halt so that everyone can live each moment in emotional, painful detail until a victor is decided. When the two teams first met in 1921, it was to determine who was the best in the world. On that occasion, the Springboks triumphed, but the parting words 'til we meet again' really set the tone of the relationship to come. After that contest, the crown was continually passed back and forth, making it one of the most exciting, and even, rivalries of the twentieth century. The matches were thrilling and sometimes bitter, with powerful grudges lasting for decades."
It is well past time imo for that crown to be passed back again. #1 for too long now !!!
Took a picture of the kids in front of a statue they had there of the infamous Mandela / Pienaar world cup photo (greatest moment in the history of sports) which I thought was appropriate with the recent passing of Mr Mandela.
