The Stats DO lie - By Kiwi Wayne Smith
At first you get the idea that Smith is saying that stats are bullshit and should not be used, but if you look closely you will see that it is actually all about the correct use of stats as one of the tools of a coach. Is his graph on his wall not also stats?
What he is saying is that you cannot just use the stats and have that as the alpha and omega. Now we have two guys on here who are always throwing around stats from the exact same source and they are forever attacking one another's use of stats. They have the exact same arguments when they attack each other's stats, even though they use the exact same source, as I have mentioned. The interesting thing is that Smith is also using that same source in compiling his graph. The only difference is that he has the entire set of stats with the relevant graphs at his disposal. The difference between the graphs that our two esteemed friends use and those of Smith is that Smith has got access to the entire system, providing the stats and not just a small frgament from the ESPN website. For that he pays in excess of £12,000 pa. That was what the price of the license was in 2011. I have posted a long post on Optasports about a year ago, but that is the program that the Chiefs and many other clubs and institutions are using. Check the list of sports clubs who are using it on this web page:
PS. I have not looked into it yet, but it seems that they now have their stats availabale for sports fans on android as well. www.optasports.com/media/124065/final_opta_rugby_overview.pdf
No surprise, for sure the coaches have more meaningful stats, the press & the public get general stats. As said these don't tell the full story, hence we end up with our debates. Maybe one day they will release more meanigful stats that fans like us can look at. This does impact fantasy rugby of course :)
I have contacted Optasports a few times, J_W, but they were adamant that you have to pay the anual license fee of £12,000, at the time to have access to their stats. The reason why I contacted them was because it was possible to download all of it, including graphs and videoclips of the SuperRugby games until one day when I discovered that it was barred. That was when I contacted them and they told me that their was no way that they could do unblock it again, because the clubs pay those kicence fees and if they open it up, they would lose that income. Some clubs would just download that, instead of using the entire solution.
As I have said, it looks like they now have it available for fans, but I am not too sure to what extent. I will give the a call sometime during the way and report back, if you are interested. If you are in the UK, you could of course phone them yourself as well. They are quite open to discuss and answer questions. Their phone number in London is +44 (0) 20 7902 0621. They also have offices in Leeds, as well as in several other countries. www.optasports.com/about/getting-in-touch/contact-us.aspx
