 He is not the first player that the Stormers has signed from London Irish. They had a Canadian loose forward from the Exiles last year or the year before as well. He is quite a popular player amongst the fans but fact is that Irish are battling to sign and retain top players at the moment. The were prepared to released him..... . I guess that says it all.

 O'Conner has  been doing quite well for them. It is not quite a financial issue as far as I know. Their coaching staff took a knock. I think they made a mistake when they got rid of Toby Booth. In addition, they then lost Michael Catt to the England  coaching squad as well. They have recently been taken  over by a consortium of Irish Businessmen who plans to turn it into the biggest rugby club in the world without turning it into a Touloun. They will apparently be able to spend the full salary cap  for the first time in many years.

The Stormers management team are looking desperate. I would be in favour of firing the whole management team if they do not finish in the top 6, or even sooner if is obvious that the they are no longer competitive during the course of the season.
Their rugby is crap to watch and now their defensive system is falling apart and no longer what it was. It is obvious that they do not know how to contract players, as their squad is a shadow of what it was a few years ago. 
It is usually pointless recruiting players from overseas because the rand is just not competitive with the likes of the Euro and Pound.
In the case of a player like Michalak from France, he always wanted to play SuperXV rugby so he was happy to play for less money. 
The rest are bargain basement stuff probably not even worth what they are getting paid. It would be better to invest in a local player for the same fee or less, and try develop them and the team. 
All teams are going to go through ups and downs while new cycles of players are retiring and starting up . 
When a team really goes down hill,  it is then time for a new coaching team to refresh things.

It does give New Zealand teams that extra dimension having big wingers like Sailosi, Savea etc- whom also have skills, speed and step of smaller players. 
They are so strong in the tackle, so that even when they get isolated out wide they are strong enough to stay on their feet long enough to offload, or until support players arrive to recycle at the ruck. 
I read that the Stormers are scared to play the ball wide because their outside backs get turned easily due to being much smaller than the New Zealand outside backs. That these turnovers then lead to tries from counter attacks. Wee Aplon, Joe Pieterson, Dejong and co just get turned over in seconds if they are isolated.
When other countries have big outside backs over 100 kg, they usually lose allot of their stepping ability, speed and skills. Jean Devilliers and Frans Steyn were both much quicker before they bulked up. 
Pierre Spies should have stayed on the wing as he has the physique of some of the pacific island descendant players.
