Meyer is going for the 2009/2010 Bools approach. But there is one big issue. That approach hinged on lineout dominance and physical dominance in the maul.
With Matfield's departure our lineout dominance may be a thing of the past. Particularly if Bekker, the one truly superior lineout lock remaining, continues to be hurt. The Krugers of the world wont be nearly as dominant at test level. And the maul is just the payoff for lineout dominance.
Denny had something when he aluded to our QF loss despite dominating the stats. We need a more balanced game, that can flex if one aspect is shut down....eg our scrumming edge was turned around in the 2003 QF and our lineout edge in the 2011 QF.
Our 2007 RWC team had more than physicality, lineout dominance and mauls. It had the ability to launch Habana from long range.. We had a credible backline threat throughout the RWC. It actually won the Pom pool game and the Bargie semi final.
Kick and chase and maul and lineout process can be spiked. For the want of a lineout the ball is lost.....for the want of the ball etc.
