….the danger of this tactic excruciatingly showcased in the Ojomoh’s try against the Bargies. We have talked about this off and on, but it’s now put up high so often, structure and tactics for this type of kick need to evolve. For example if the winger isn’t contesting the ball, he should probably always go deep beyond the catch.

And for these reasons, doing this in a tight test match can’t be an automatic, particularly for balls dropping in your own half.

I struggle with these high kicks - it’s so hit and miss and serves to do our beloved game a disservice. It’s a part of the game that lacks precision

It's just become a mess to be honest. Austin Healy in the commentary after that potentially nasty collision between Freddie and Isgro flying into the air after the ball even suggested that blockers should be used again to make the contest safer. I haven't watched the game again but I had the impression that the Boks too got very little change out of all those high balls we put up, especially Reinach's little kiddie boxies.

It’s a shit part of our game - probably the only shit part. High kicks or boring gaining grounds kicking back and forth

It has to be in the game though.

Box kicks are a blight on the game alright and I’m not just saying that because the ABs can’t catch one to save themselves!

Former Blues halfback says the 9s are far too protected now and with those moronic caterpillar rucks are given far too much time to kick accurately. Opposition should be able to challenge the 9 as soon as he touches the ball which would put him under pressure and made to pass more often.
