Given the crap I read on here, I thought it best I check the reality of how he played. Feel free to contradict any of my takes here, but my first impression when I watched the game live was that he had a very good game and my second viewing verified that, in fact it confirmed he was the best lock on the field by some distance.

I heard rubbish that he had been tossed around like a rag doll - yeah right, he gets taken out twice - not by individuals but once by the two Potgieters and the second time by Ndungane and JJ, after initially carrying them forward - but I guess the individual who said he got tossed about, expected him to take on two players at once and beat them????

Anyway here are the facts about Steph du Toit's play for the visually impaired Moz and Beenkop:

In minute 1 he drives Greyling back in a maul

In 3rd min takes a great line out ball, first line-out of match

In 5th min takes pass and runs straight through Morne and is then flattened by both Potgieters together - great hit by them

In 7th min gets ball out wide runs into Ndunagne and JJ moving them backwards and they manage to get him down into touch

In 8th min joins maul and drives poor Bismark with interest through the maul, great physicality

In 10th min joins maul again near Bulls line, very physical again

In 14th min brushes Hougaard off like a rag doll at side of maul when Hougaard tries to hold onto him

In 16th min Hougaard steps him well as he does a few others, including Bresler missing a straight tackle on Hougaard

In 20th min he assits Coetzee on a charge driving through W Kruger

In 26th min he assits Coetzee again on the charge

In 27th min makes a good low tackle on J Potgieter

In 28th min tackles Chiliboy

In 29th min takes ball at pace runs well and is tackled low by D Potgieter

In 31st min takes kick off ball well and runs straight through W. Kruger - picks up injury to shin when taking the kick off (he should have gone off here but soldiered on through the pain as limped around for the rest of the time he was on the field)

In 33rd min joins maul and wins ball back, goes down injured, has leg checked and seen to.

In 36th min he tackles Greyling

In 37th min he flings Kirchner down in tackle

In 38th min he runs into Greyling and Morne, Greyling rips ball off him.

Kid is in clear agony and goes off having stayed on for last 8 min injured.

The kid had a good physical half lending grunt to mauls and a massively dominant scrum - so much for being tossed about, missing a tackle (wow Hougaard stepped him as he does most). His only negative was having that ball ripped off him by Greyling, when Greyling and Morne had him, this when the kid was clearly in agony and limping about.

This kid has a bright future and has Bok written all over him. Ah yeah apparently he is a bean pole, had to laugh at that as well, seeing the massive lad running around. If 2m and 117kg constiutes a bean pole at age 19, I'd hate to see what constitues a bulky player. Can see exactly why Meyer invited him to the Bok training camp. This kid and Eben Etzebeth could prove a better combo than  Bakkies and Matfield, they will provide better all round skills and grunt, they wont match Matfield in the line-outs though.

They are both very exciting prospects and given they are only 19 and 20, still have some growing to do.....Eben will end up being 125kg +, Steph du Toit 120kg +

Saffex

Thanks for the detailed breakdown.  I never said anything negative of his performance in his first Super 15 game.  He made a real impression - bad about his injury  and hope he is fit to play this coming weekend.

A small boy he defintiely is not and I do not know where some figures come from.

In summary....he won one lineout, made one pass, lost the ball once, missed one tackle and conceded one penalty. Huge!

Conceded a penalty?

Yeah Moz thats all he did, he never hit the mauls physically, never made numerous tackles, never ran through Morne and W.Kruger, never assited runners on the charge, never took a kick off, never turned possession over, played no part in the dominant Sharks scrum and was not better than Bresler, Flip and Jeandre Kruger

What my second viewing clearly confirmed is the fact that you clearly lied about him being tossed about - why am I not shocked?

I don't lie Dave, it's not my style. Here are the objective facts, just as I reported them:

L du Toit 0/0 0 0/1/5 17 0 0 0 1 4/1 1/0 1 0/0

The facts are as I reported them and you did lie, you said he got thrown around like a rag doll or something to that effect - when was this exactly??

When he was stripped....and almost every time in contact. Experienced players know when to look for the extra metre, and when to make the ball secure by hitting the deck. This kid tried to batter his way for extra metres and ran upright, and into two big players. Stupid really.

Very impressed with his play and maturity...and only 19.

Now Saffex you have at last cottoned onto a winner for the Green and Gold.

Arthur John

You are 100% correct - I would start off by putting Du Toit on the bench  for the Springboks.

snapster and mike you are gmblers and doing the Kid no service at all even by playing him off the bench.

No one disagrees that Do Toit is highly promising but dont feed him to the wolves. Let him find his feet at super 15 lev3l,

no more slliness please on this issue, Juandre will be replaced by Bekker. Etzebeth by next year should be ven better. 2014 think abour du toit if he is cutting it.

As for Kolisi he will never be vagueln the league of Schalk and will never be IRB palyer of the year. Hahahahahaahhaha how cluless do you get!!!!! Current Bok loose trio if all fit is -Schalk, Vermulen and Alberts. No question about it. If Schalk and Vermuelen dont come back to form then we think again and players like Elstadt, Coetzee etc come into the picture.

What we want is to win each match and seemlessly bring in the younger players.

Finally Adriaan Strauus is an excellent hooker and the repalcement to Bissie if needs be. Forget about chilli boy pleaseoaks he is a mediocre player even though ou snapster continues to punt for him.

Habana is still our man. Leave him be you youth fanatics!

Have to agree with everything you said there HasBeen. The idea of putting that slight young man in a Bok team is pure lunacy.....starting or on the bench.  As for changing Habana for JJ what do these guys actually see? How many high balls does Habana win, how many times does he get the team going forward, how many times does he disrupt at the breakdown.

I actually think Dave misses about 50% of what actually happens on the field, due to those huge blinkers he has clamped to his noggin.

Moz, what complete rubbish, when he was stripped he was moving forward and every other time he took contact he dominated - FACT, except for the time BOTH Potgieters hit him at once.

Please dont make this shit up, its pathetic. The basics of coaching has moved on from the day you played the game, if you ever played it that is. You never go down in rugby, you go forward, why on earth would you coach a player to go down. The only time you go down is when you are brought down.

How the f can this guy be slight weighing 117kg's........bloody hell man you say I miss 50% of what happens on the field. The kid is a big lad, slight my arse

Wrong AJ, I called Eztebeth as I did Coetzee as I am Kitshoff, Taute, JJ, Goosen and Kolisi

Agree he has potential and had some good moments, but no way should he be in the Bok setup yet. He doesn't look or play like 117kgs - the Potgieter tackle, foolishy going high into the tackle on the sideline run and being thrown out of bounds, getting stripped - a lot of being overpowered in a single half.

There is absolutely no reason to rush  the young guns - they need to grow in confidence and experience. Super 15 / Currie Cup is perfect.

guys Klein Spiere was the best lock on the park he played better than the bulls locks. He will only get better, and really looks like the future partner to Etzebeth if Bekker doesn't get back to form. Even though bekker is starting to show touches again, i was really concerned aboput him at a time during the Comp, hopefullty he gets back. Klein Spiere can play off the bench. To cover both 7 and 5.

Oimatey, please dont make uninformed comments that lack credibility. If you had actually watched the Potgieter tackle you would realise that he was hit by two Potgieters at the same time, how on earth can this constitute being overpowered unless of course you expected a single player to overcome two!!!!!!!!!!

As for the touchline incident, is it usual for a player to go in low when running down a touchline. This aside, the kid was high for he was trying to free his arms to offload the ball and keep it alive, unlike most donkey forwards who just put their heads down and go. He was hit by Ndungane and JJ - so take it this constitues being overpowered again.

The kid is big, how the hell he looks anything but 115kg's + is beyond me. The Junior WC site had him at 115kg, the Media Guide had him at 117kg
