The value of taking the points....

Pushing into the last 10 minutes of the game the Stormers took a crucial kick at goal...and then again at the death. The first kick enabled a draw via penalty, if not taken the only recourse was to score a try....unlikely because only 1 try was scored by the Stormers in the first 70 minutes, despite several attempted mauling tries. So the calculus was to try a 14% go for broke probability...or build towards a result. Not the decision one would have made earlier in the half....but towards the end of the halves the probabilities suggest taking your kicks make sense.

Two of our teams managed to draw with what is a fantastic Crusaders team. One of those draws was away from home. I think from a psychological point of view, that is good for South Africa. If we had lost those two games, even just by a couple of points, the NZ'ers would have had a huge advantage going into the Rugby Champs. Even though the Crusties will undoubtedly win Super Rugby 2019, our boys will have the belief that the NZ teams did not have it all their own way and that we could could have beaten them. Many players from both the Sharks and the Stormers will be in the the Bok mix. Tiny percentages are the difference between winning and losing in test match rugby, belief is a massive part of those tiny percentages. Outside of those two draws, bar one or two wins, our teams have performed poorly against NZ opposition this season, so ja, a couple of draws in the big picture are golden. 
For the record, I like the kick for the corner option in most cases, but Kolisi made the right call in this case. What I found a lot more worrying, was the descent from his players when he made that call. It was almost a mutiny. Definitely not a captain with the respect of his team. He basically threw a tantrum to get his team mates to back off.   

The decision to take the 3 points and accept a meaningless draw was stupid and gutless and I'm not surprised some of the players were annoyed with the decision.
If there'd been time to take the penalty kick and still have a restart I could accept it, but to just accept a tame draw and give up on what could have been a famous victory is something I'd only expect from the limp-wristed Stompie mincers.

In the context that the Stormers are the worst attacking team in Super Rugby, it may have been the right decision for them. 
Their rolling maul has been negated, and the backlink rarely functions as a unit- to have the creativity to build a paper aeroplane - let alone construct a try.
