insightful read there, personally i would love for the rule to pull down mauls to be legal again, it is the one and only area in rugby where NZ have never been able to get the better of our bros in SA. but theres also the added bonus of being kept on the edge of ur seats, which i sometimes find against the stronger SA teams.
its a strong weapon and SA teams do score a lot from it (prob more often then not), but its not dominating so should be left as is.

IMO crusaders have been the best at countering lineouts and setpieces that originate from them. if u watch the cursdaers vs stormers game in newlands, u will see the crusaders destroy nearly every single lineout and lineout set pieces, it was something they did all year against everyone.

i also agree with all hur arguments, though i never heard that it was dangerous, which sounds a bit fishy, cos if it was, then wouldnt a yellow card be warranted for anyone who brings it down??? also, if u are the only one form the defneding team involved in the rolling maul, u are legally allowed tio bring it down, making the dangerous call even more odd.

be that as it may, i agree that its had a very negative effect on SA ability to be able to evolve their attack past the line out rolling maul drive and the boot of the goal kicker.
cheetahs have shown some real gusto, theres a reason why they are the most liked SA team in OZ and NZ, they back their backs ability and it has reaped them some nice rewards in 2013.

this mindset is also why habana is one of the best wingers in the world, how many tries do u see him score which he starts??? i would like to see the numbers, but it feels like the vast majority of his tries is on the back of his hardwork and movements he instigated.
habana has relaised either by design or accident that in order for him to be at his best, he needs to go looking for the ball and always make sure hes in the optimum position to support or sniff out holes in the defence.

i cant help but feel that the SA love affair with the bigger is better mentality hasnt helped matters either. meyer with his latest team still hasnt grasped that mobility is just as important as physicality, IMO even more so.
one thing is clear, theres no saffa coach in SA or abroad who has what it takes to break the mould, so maybe its time to start looking at a NZ coach, -_o

The rolling maul is an exciting asoect of rugby and always has the crowds on its feet. It takes great skill to get right and we are the envy of the wee abs.

No until they ban crooked kiwi refs long live the rolling maul. 

 Each to his own, I see it as about  as exciting as the scrum. The glory of rugby is  a wing like Habana in full flight. But I have no problem with the maul as long as it isn't over done and is contested. The offside rules still protect the ball carrier. But if the maul can be collapsed it better tests strength and ingenuity....and gives the defending side a chance, without making the penalty almost inevitable. 

The Cheetahs certainly seem more adventurous Sasu, but the numbers apparently don't confirm that. I am of the view though that with Willie they run kicks back more effectively. Take Willie away, and I fear the Cheetahs will be just like other Saffa teams in back play. Their forwards do seem to handle better, though.

 I agree with both benno and mo on this one i mean the thing that bores me about the mauls is when they try and try with no success expecting a different result *cough* Semi final bulls*cough* but nothing excites me more than when it does work and you see 8 men all charging up the field it is a lovely sight! 

Mo you raised one of my pet hates in your comment the hit in scrums it is not needed and is very dangerous to players! but then again i guess the scrum would have no excitement in it if not for the hit! i also hate the feeding that goes on in scrums gets my panties in a twist like no other!

KZS - I agree. A truely unique spectacle when pulled off correctly, but it is used way too often
