Chaps there is a certain smallness to this reaction. Tokkie I understand, the poor obsessive has to contradict me. But this is an unbelievable accomplishment and Gatlin is clean as a whistle now. He was always a magnificent sprinter in the shadow of Bolt and the drugs scandal. In this run he has vanquished both those opponents. You could simply acknowledge the feat.

 I still have doubts about Gatlin - they should save his urine and test it again 20years down the line when new tests are developed to pick the new drugs in the system.

I for one do not think that Gatlin should ever have been allowed to compete after his drug use.
Not only is it cheating but it is also a case of actually being rewarded financially (stealing) for questionable use of performance boosting drugs. Twice if I recall. 
We all remember what Benzine Johnson did in the Olympics.
Until the IAAF introduces a life ban for drug use, the drama will continue.
Money, glory, and fame should never be afforded to CHEATERS.

The author is banging his same old tired drum about older athletes being better than young ones . . . but he's too stupid to know that the greatest sprinter in athletics history - while still capable of a bronze medal in his 30s - actually set his world records as a 25 year old. 
Only a complete athletics noob would dispute that Usain Bolt (as with the majority of athletes) was at his peak in his mid twenties.
Justin Gatlin is one of the rare exceptions but mainly because he lost 4 years of competition because of drug cheating so he had more longevity than someone like Bolt. Even then, the one and only time Gatlin set a world record was in 2006 when he was aged 24.
But we don't need to look at individuals. The simple fact of the matter is that the world record for 100m for a man aged over 30 is 9.80. The world record for a man in his 20s is 9.58.
That's pretty much all you need to know to end this stupid argument . . . but don't tell the self-important old fool that he has egg all over his fat face!

Wrong argument. The question isn't whether great athletes are better in their mid twenties. The question is whether those athletes are still good enough to select in their thirties. So who wouldn't still select Gatlin and Bolt for a 6man race to determine the world's current fastest human? Right...nobody in his right mind. .. So switch to team sports where experience and reading the game are much more relevant. How much more should team sport athletes be considered into their 30s. Who apart from Messi is better than 32 year old Ronaldo. .. The pure athletic credentials just support the case.

Well it's a fair point, though all I find is mice testing...on a brief search. And even the researchers point out their results are preliminary. Coe made your point after Gatlin won. But in all honesty there is a touch of hypocrisy in all this....and no doubt the boo'ers in the stands are well schooled by the ever 'fair minded' British press. .. Still Gatlin was caught in 2001 and again in 2006. He has gotten more competitive over the last 3 seasons....8 or more years since being caught. So was this also due to doping? There has to be a measure of doubt about anything Gatlin, but also considerable scrutiny. .. Perhaps there are residual effects of the drugs after 11 years, but we don't have the research that conclusively proves that. Gatlin has been allowed to run and now that he has finally won a big one, all the bile comes out. Some from the Jamaicans whose own fast men Osafa Powell and Blake have also tested positive more recently. Blake wasn't boo'ed when he finished fourth, I wonder why.

 The obsession with age of sportsmen over 30  is laughable.   What is the point?   It is equated with the foolish notion that team selection should be determined by reputation and merit performance is not a norm at all.
