Ya, we have our gripes...disappointing rugby results, equities hovering and taking a downward trend, SA government searching for more revenue (an ongoing scenario what will never end).
What do you do Mozart?...you retired 50 , 55 or 60...that's good in USA must be very clever 15 million or 20 or 50...I'm just bloody poor used to live like a rich man...as a young man lived at no 16 "Hideaway" Third Beach Clifton...lived like lords...with nominal rent. After a piss-up at Royal Cape Yacht Club one day...they were making a movie called "Wild Geese" had a bad habit of meeting my high flying mate Alan...top writer at Liberty Life in those days...it was a Friday afternoon @Royal Cape we had a good meal of curry and rice and surjourned to the pub afterwards. We met Richard Harris, Richard Burton ,Hardy Kruger and Ann Turkel in the club bar afterwards and got slightly pissed...my bad old days before I got converted.
Anyway...it was fun and unusual...these guys were big movie stars...but very ordinary guys...Burton came with body guards to our place for a braai...drank all our good wines.....had to assist up right the steps...Richard Harris's wife Anne Turkel assisting.
Nobody believed us the next day. Richard was whistled told me about the only women he ever loved , Elizabeth Taylor. I have still a picture of him and Harris and Roger at our cottage at Clifton....those were were the parmy days of my youth...today you will not get close to celebritities...but these guys were bigger than Brad Pitts and Robert Di Nero in these years. "Bertie"...Richard Burton as we called him was a character of note, jokes, entertainment etc and Welsh rugby...it was hard to believe that this guy had Elizabeth Taylor crazy about him...a very witty and nice, working class guy with an Oxford accent. He really was a nice person.
My mate Alan had all the photos but he died in drowning off Cape Town while spearfishing. Those were parmy and paradise years. Peter Whip, Rob Louw and others the rugby crowd used to pop into our cottage every now and again in those days.
