Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus may well be judged on his results on the field, but the steps he has taken off the field could pre-empt the first actual “dawn of a new era” in Springbok rugby.
On Saturday when Siya Kolisi steps onto the field as the first black captain of the Springbok team, it will not be taking just a small step forward for Springbok rugby, but a necessary one. (Why necessary, is he the best man for the job. Does he actually deserve a spot in the team!!!)
To say it is a gamble would be wrongly dismissive of Kolisi's talents, who has had to prove himself over and over again in the international cauldron of test rugby, not to mention having to overcome the doubters all around the country. (One thing Kolis hasnt done is overcome the doubters. On form he has proven nothing yet)
But it goes further than that. Erasmus has broken a number of taboos and treads where other coaches have feared to move in the past. The safety net of juggling numbers in the national team is not an option for the Springboks’ newest coach, he speaks of making “brave moves” to ensure the Boks are a factor in international rugby again.(Brave moves within the quotas mandate)
On Saturday not only will Erasmus break ground with the first black Springbok captain, but the team may well field its first starting black front row, while the 11 black players in the match squad of 23 is another wall that Erasmus has broken down.(As long as the colour quota is right everything is right!!! Extraordinary BS)
It is a strategy that addresses not only the need for transformation in South Africa, but also the need for the Springboks to achieve their own transformation goals by the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In the face of ignorance by the Super Rugby franchises, Erasmus has not complained like his predecessors, he has simply adopted a top-down approach. (What choce dd Rassie have? The quota rule was going to be adopted regardless!)
It is true that Erasmus will be judged on results and Saturday’s fixture against England provides a tricky opener against a well-funded, organised and astute opponent. But it is in this that Erasmus has not shied away like his predecessors. He hasn’t retreated to the safety of what is known and what has worked in the past.
He may find it doesn’t work as well and he may find some players wanting, but already he has ignited an interest in a larger majority of South Africans through Kolisi’s appointment than ever was imagined.
Already the headlines have changed to positive surrounding the Bok team and there is an underlying sense of excitement at what can happen. Many dread what might happen when fielding a non merit side!!!!)
And it requires patience. The sooner we truly have a game for all with heroes that every part of South Africa can identify, the better the long-term health for SA Rugby. (Make sure there is an indian and an Asian in the team Please!!! Also the diversity needs to reflect the population stats so maybe its hal an indian)
But more than that, the Boks have slipped to number seven in World Rugby. They have lurched from defeat to defeat under Allister Coetzee and new lows, previously unthought of, seem now almost like talking points.(AND OF COURSE QUOTA COACH AND PLAYERS HAD ZERO PART TO PLAY!!!)
BRAVE CALLS
It is time to try something radical, something different, and to embrace the direction that Springbok rugby has committed itself to. (CODE FOR: its time to entrench race based selections and to hell with anything else) As Erasmus said this week, we can’t carry on the same way when things aren’t working. We have to make brave calls.
“Without a doubt it is important. It’s massively important. We have to make brave calls and not be in crisis mode or survival mode,” he told journalists.
“The moment we go into that we will start making conservative selections and we will go back to the old guys that you trust.
“I guess the balance that I am trying to do and we are trying to do is to keep on evolving in terms of testing guys and trying guys. Putting guys under pressure and building leadership in a team and hopefully winning while doing that.
“But yes we are under pressure to win, especially after the loss last weekend but I don’t want to stop trying things because then we will never catch up to the other countries. It is important, it is the main thing but we need to get the balance right in trying to evolve with other things.”(THAT is NOT the PROBLEM)
The Springboks have picked some exceptional athletes that still need to be tried and tested on the brutality of the test match stage.
And setbacks will come, but this is the first glimpse of a Springbok team that can inspire a nation through a captain who leads from the front (BWHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH SNCE WHEN????) and players who resonate in all corners of society.(BUT ARE NOT THERE DUE TO MERiT SELECTiON REQUiREMENTS!!!)
Erasmus may well succumb to the pressures of the job (you mean succumb imposed quotas), but ahead of England he has done more than pay just lip service to transformation. He has backed the belief that there are some exceptional rugby players in every part of this country.(We want the best player so stop this absurd spinning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
And that is why this new dawn for Springbok rugby is more than just exciting.(ONLY if we win!!)
