I am bitterly disappointed in what happened today.   The follwing made a determined bit to lose the match for us:-

*   Jannie du Plessis

*   Gurthro Steenkamp

*   Juan Smith

The first two was a disaster - especially Mozart Natiobnal Treasure was disgusting in scrumming.  Juan Smith was totally invisible - another French Club failure.  The backline got hopeless balls and Pienaar was int he main absolutely useless.   And Morne Steyn - what was that klast kick directly into toufch was about?

At least with Malhrbe and Beat coming on we did win two scrums and now Malherbe  was injured - where are we going to find decent tighthead.

I think we better start looking at players like Thomas du Toit and the Lions Tighthead - the suggestions of Mozart as to props are serious jokes - especially the National Treasure did squat positive.

Bakkies Botha came on and the first thing he did was to give away a penalty.   For the rest he as worthless as well.   The whole issue is we are wrong to stick with some of the geriatrics - time to clean house

Juan Smith can take his tendon and piss off. Jannie was useless, I have spoken on another thread that can be referenced in more details about the failures of today

I must say the scrum on the 63rd minute (Approx) was a complete mess up by Walsh. The Argentine loosehead clearly scrummed inwards.
Bismarck needs to be knocked down to planet earth, his 2013 form was ridiculous but he has regressed 150% this year.

I think you were talking about Marcus Ayerza ?

Regardless of that fact, it was an horrendous display yet again. You were lucky to win.

Zeromoron
The real problem remained - how can one play the two props whos tarted today and hope for something better.  Matfield and Botha are deficient in scrums - more so than our present locks.   We would have lost the game badly tday if those two played - the scrums would even have been worse.
As to Bakkies - he made a determind effort to lose the game for us - that was the only thing he did in any evnt.
These bloody French Club players needed to be weeded out of the Springbok squad.   That applies to Juan Smith, Bakkies Botha, Gurthro Steenkamp and Morne Steyn.

We showed tremendous guts to win that match, everything was going wrong, it was as hot as hades and we were virtually in Paraguay. Our opponents were big, very physical chaps. I for one am proud of the guys.

Actually until Malherbe arrived our front row was fine at contact, and stayed engaged. It was the secondary shove behind the loosehead that killed us. ....Lomp vs their lock. After Malherbe came on they never stood once, we were fortunate he was only penalized once.

You can not be that bias, Jannie was the reason the scrum was so bad.

Balls - are you crazy or something?  The scrums were in full retreat with Jannie and Gurthro as props.   At least we won two scrums with Malherbe and Beast on - before that we lost everything.
Now suddenly it is De Jager to blame fior Jannie's bugger-ups?   The same old MoZart - always find excuses and come up with false info to justify it.   You are disgusting - are yiou not ashamed to write the rubbish you do so regularly?

Look at the scrums again. Firstly the Bargie loosiehead was hinging big time...pulling back from contact, and then boring in sideways. He did that every time....not just the time he was penalized. Secondly the scrums held for a good 5 seconds then went into reverse. Our whole scrum was being pushed backwards. Jannie  wasn't great, but better than Malherbe. And as you yourself said Lomp was poor.  We had a heavier scrum, Argentina simply out pushed us and got into dominant technical positions, some of which were illegal.
Use your brains, Jannie has stood against all the best looseheads for a decade, he doesn't suddenly become incapable of doing that.

Fact is Malherbe was BETTER than Jannie - and miles better.  What you said as follows applies totally to the case where Malherbe was penalized:-
"rstly the Bargie loosiehead was hinging big time...pulling back from contact, and then boring in sideways"
In the case of Jannie the scrum was in reverse all the time.  I never said De Jager was poor - he was a damn site better than Slapgat would have been.
Jannie ahs been up and down - monstly down in scrums this year - nobody was penalized in scrumming more than him this year.   Thios is not the first time iot happened it is the case regularly. That was the problem throughout the past Super 15 - but you refuse to recognize and accept it.

Lomp missed 5 of his 11 attempted tackles, including one for a try. Malherbe was penalized once in what, three scrums, Jannie once and Steenkamp not at all. Steenkamp helped set up Habana's try with a big tackle. Let me guess, you missed all that.
The fact is we scrummed very poorly. None of our props took the pressure. Most scrums held for 5 or so seconds then shunted back. It was diabolical, the worst scrumming I have seen from the Boks ever. But to assume this all happened because two props who pretty much destroyed Wales a few months back can't scrum is naive.

Unfortunately I didn't see the game. Following game threads online it sounded like the Boks yet again kicked most of their possession away, even when they fell behind after the two quick Argie tries. Is this true?

Herrera,Creevy and Ayerza made short work of Jannie,Bissie and Steenkamp...Ayerza punished Jannie in set pieces...Lood was pathetic and Etzebeth was not much better...Tomas managed to take his lineouts and only let his side down once when he was penalised for going off his feet.

Martin Hernandez is still great too...as he was in his youth.

The Puma front is awesome...interested to see how Austr and NZ handle this front...and that's without the Saracen player, Juan Figallo...still a mystery why he did not play...all front line relatively young...we have old has beens.

Also one wonders if the Championship venue are subtly manipulated...weaker sides (except the ANZ which was a "feel-out" ) have ALL to play away first!...think about it.

The AB's are nevertheless the unquestionable top dog...all the rest still have something to settle.

Nothing has changed much, except the Pumas are getting there...they tend to play mediocre rugby against sides like Scotland but raise their rugby level against SA and in 2007 they beat France twice in WC in France, something that the AB's couldn't do but that's also a flash in the pan and history. The question is can they be more consistent...it will be hard because Latin blood runs hot and cold, we see it in soccer so many times and in rugby with France and Italy but the Argies are somewhat a mixture between predominate  Spanish, German, Italian,English and some indigenous Indian.

Well done Argentina and with Eva Peron I will say,No need to cry, certainly not for anyone and certainly not their rugby and certainly not their football.

I love reading the posts after the boks played a game of rugga. Well, if you can call this rugby..

First things first, a win is a win. We could have lost the game so there is one positive.

Second, not one player had a good game, okay maybe 2 or 3. The first thing after every game i ask myself is, who stood out from the crowd? In a good game of rugby there are always 3-6 names of player who stood out. Yet last night i couldn't name one.

From no 1 to no 23 was poor. Except for 2 or 3 guys.

Yet week in and week out a guy like not so clevermike is telling us it is only a selective few that is the problem.

Clevermike. Where to begin with all the rubbish you are posting? I will give it a go anyway.

You mention that the first thing bakkies did when he came onto the field was give away a penalty. Well done on the observation 10/10. It was for offside.

The very 1st thing De Allende did was flipping a guy over 10m away from the ball. Good thing the tmo was missing in action at that moment. Was it bakkies doing the exact same thing not so clevermike would be all over it.

You mention that Juan was invisible. Well done on the observation 10/10.

Unless we watched 2 different games the following guys were also invisible- 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,13,14. Why don't you mention them?

Thanks Ceradyne for asking the scrum question. Against the world XV and Wales it was Victor and Bakkies not scrumming. Now we have Lood and Eben at lock so by God, it must be the props not scrumming!!

Now i am gonging to use clevermike logic to solve the problem we have come scrum time.

Lood made 6 tackles and then missed 6. He took 5 lineout balls and gave away 1 penalty. That is not even close to good enough for test level. Eben made 9 tackles (only second to Louw) and missed none. Very good. He lost the ball twice in contact. He stole 2 lineout balls, good. The stat that worries me is he carried the ball 8 times for a total of 9 meters. That is more or less 1 meter gain every time he had the ball.

Seeing that you recieve the ball anything from 1-4 meter behind the gain line that would suggest that he didn't make the advantage line once. Or got over it once or twice and the other 6 times got stopped in his tracks or tackled backwards. Why all the useless info?

Few moths back not so clevermike went on about a no 4 lock that doesn't carry the ball is not a lock. So using that logic i have solved the scrumming dilemma. We are only using one lock in the scrums, the no 5. Someone get this info to the coaching staff asap.

Back to point. The guys currently playing are the best we have.

Jannie and beast useless but no one to replace them.

du plessis the best we have, but yesterday strauss was better the time he was on

eben the best 4 in the country

lood will move to the bench with matfield in next game.

louw best we have

vermeulen the best we have

give juan another chance. If he doesn't perform replace him. Coetzee did very good when he came on

Never been a Ruan fan. Didn't play bad. Fourie still way better.

Pollard not the man for 10. Or not right now. Steyn best we have, and is shocking.

Habana best we have.

Jean captain so will stay till next year. Not that anyone is pushing for a place.

De Allende had two games and two fails. But with the other options being fourie and pieterson i will stick with De Allende for now.

Hendricks good enough, just need more ball.

Willie best we have. SA papers not doing him any favoures. After 2 good games against minnows calling him the best in the world. He is no 3 after Aus and NZ fullbacks.

Clevermike

If the guys you don't like play bad, bad mouth them. But if the good players according to you have a bad game, treat them the same.

Both the locks had at best poor games. Yet you single out bakkies for being offside.

So no one else was offside the rest of the game?

At least 10 player were invisible, yet you single out Juan. So the other 14 guys were in your face the entire match?

Get your head out of your behind, just like the tight 5 had to do after every scrum and start being objective.

You have a little bit of rugby knowledge, but your dislike of some players is denting your credibility.

You are welcome to your own assessment of players and welcome to make a posting.   I agree with some of your comments.
I did an assessment of player performances and wrote down what I believe was a fair assessment afterwards.    There was no doubnt about certain players and to say blithely that some players I dislike are slighted by me and some players I like is exonerated.   I have always supported players like Willie le Roux, Jean de Villiers,  Bryan Habana, Francois Louw,  Jannie du Plessis and  Bismarck du Plessis and indicated where things went wrong yesterday.

The players I criticized yesterday was worse than expected and to ssay there is nobody to replace them is insulting.  There definitely are and that remains a problem in squad selection.  In Super 15 this year for instance the Lions props and scrumming was the ebst in Super 15 - why not try them out?   Why go with Steenkamp and not start with Beast?   Why stick with the French club players when they are clearly under-par?   Bakkies was insiginificant last week and did not - other than the off-side play produced nothing yesterday when he came on.   Juan Smith was definitely not up to standard.
I think that we need to relaize that new players are thrown into the deep end because the rest are deficient.   Matfield is seriously physically-deficient in Tight 5 play and that rolling maul try would never have been scored with him in the game.
I think that we need to realize that the worst under-performers yesterday was not the new players - but rather some of  the experienced players.   New players can improve with experience - but under-performing experienced players are hardly going to improve and will cost us dealy in future.

I think you made some good points Believer, on the otherhand Mike's critics are

sometimes ironically just as bad as him so it is hypocrisy or the pot calling the kettle black.

I think Mike is basically a good guy and does know his rugby but does vent his feelings in extreme forms sometimes but so do others and none of us to be honest are fool proof experts, not even the coach who despite his vast knowledge of the game appears so stuck with loyalty and sentimentally to certain players...a trend common amongst the rugby family. In John Smit's book, Barney diplomatically reveals this...when you are in the top of the rugby player elite, there are many factors that prevent the ordinary man in the street from knowing the real truth. Players themselves are especially frustrated as they are bound by silence...they can see the mistakes and foibles of coaches and other administrators, managers etc. but are bound to keep quiet, first of all by fear of losing favour and jeopardising their chances in the future and often by simple humility and loyalty.

I think HM is a good coach at provincial and franchise levels but lacks something as a national coach.

National coaches MUST never have favourites, be conservative and have loyalties to individuals but in the same token have absolute INTEGRITY and HONESTY to do the deserving and right thing.

To demonstrate this lets take Dr Danie Craven, an extremely conservative Afrikaner who adored rugby especially in his beloved Stellenbosch and Western Province but never let his biased and favourites over rule the deserving.

Ol Doc had his adversary in the cauldron but was strong, stubborn, tough as nails and at times very dogmatic but had two MAJOR qualities that are needed;

1) He was about all things, extremely HONEST...i.e. Keith Oxlee "was net 'n piesang boer speler " but he was the best number 10 in the country then and knew the game very well and was very creative...so despite this he got the job. Similarly Tommy Bedford was an outspoken "liberal and Engels man van Natal"...but was an outstanding and intelligent number 8...he got the job and captaincy to crown it.

2) Craven understood and knew the game better than any other in SA if not the world. Many a great All Black, English man and Frenchman will tell you that.

I don't believe HM has these qualities, at least not in the degree that Craven had.

To come back to Ol Mike...he said this

"I think that we need to realize that the worst under-performers yesterday was not the new players - but rather some of  the experienced players.   New players can improve with experience - but under-performing experienced players are hardly going to improve and will cost us dealy in future. "

This is correct and shows indeed some insight into part of the problem.

But to me this is the coach, no disrespect but very simply just not quite the right person for the job.

A lot of what you said in your post i agree with. It's what you are not saying that i have a problem with. If someone that didn't watch the game read your first post they would get the following:
Bakkies was useless.Juan was useless.Steenkamp was useless.Jannie was useless.                The end.
And the rest?
Bismarck was useless(half the player he was last season)Jood was useless.(if not for the lineouts Jood would have been just as invisible)Eben was half useless.(only thing saving him was his tackle count)The list goes on, 10,12,13.But only a few got mentioned. This will obviously give me the impression that you have players you like and those you don't. No matter the performance. I agree with your last statement to an extend. Meyer is looking to the future. Were it not for pieter and flip being injured, Bakkies wouldn't even be in the championship. So do you give another lock a cap for 10min off the bench, and then never play him again? Or do you give the 80 caps veteran the 10min? In the case of Juan i can only say that we as South Africans are the most pathetic bunch of them all. Juan IS one of the best loose forwards that this country ever produced. He was in excellent form for toulon. I watched every game and he is still the best. Give the man a chance. NZ wrap their players in cotton and bubble wrap.In SA we build a useless player up to God status and love to watch them fall.I say give Juan another 2 tests. If he doesn't shape up cut him loose.

This is exaclly why i don't like to post on the forum. I just like reading the comments.I have my favourite players but will be the first to say when they had a bad game. But i get what your saying.
And to say that old Doc Craven was stubborn is the understatement o f the year..

My problm is that Bakkies had had a string oc chances since November last year and none showed anything much.  I was in strong support of the selection of Juan Smith at 7 - but was disappointed with his performance.  I do not like giving players chances in tests - they must prove that they belong when getting opportunities.  What bothers me about Juan is his club background and the fact that he is polaying for Toulon and Bakkies was not really up to standard at lock for the Springboks.  The question remains is - is Huan the same?
Talking about Doc Craven - I met him once and told the story of the incident before on this site.   He was the epitome of stubborness - but was able to psyche up the players to a maddive extent.
