But by 9.30pm last night the Democratic candidate’s numbers started to crash. 

Within the hour, the New York Times, like many other news outlets, flipped to favour Trump by over 77 per cent.

Sweeping to victory by surprising margins in key swing states, the Republican candidate picked up Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The polls were way off.
