By John Reason  on The Rugby Site (John I believe is a New Zealander)

I have no idea what SANZAR thought they were doing when they appointed Bryce Lawrence to the match between the Reds and the Crusaders at the weekend. Maybe they had taken a blow too many to the head. But the officiating of this game was an accident waiting to happen.

Look at the chat forums before the game. They nearly all predicted a penalty count exactly along the lines of the one that transpired. The Reds were much the better side, yet they were hammered 17-7 on an horrendously one-sided evening of reffing. Sad to say Mr Lawrence was the difference between the teams and the sooner Super 15 brings back neutral refs, the better.(HEAR HEAR)

It was not just the Reds that Lawrence penalised, but the other New Zealand teams striving to get to the knockout stages. If the Reds had won by under 7 points, a likely result with equitable reffing, the Chiefs would now be 10 points clear of the Crusaders and the Highlanders, with the Hurricanes a further 3 behind. The Reds would also have a much better chance of chasing down the Brumbies. Instead Mr Lawrence has ruined another rugby weekend for many people.

It is not Mr Lawrence whom we should be annoyed with. The bloke does his best and anyone who has tried refereeing will know that is it an horrendously difficult job, particularly given the mess that the IRB, unduly swayed by the Southern Hemisphere, has made of the laws.(Nz induced changes to suit them?)

No, we should be irritated with the people in charge of the refs who continue to put him out there. Lawrence has no idea how to officiate the scrummage. He made a complete hash of the Ireland versus Australia Rugby World Cup pool game (As all but ou windpomp know). The multiple errors he made with the scrummage were detailed to me at the time by a former international prop of neutral outlook. “Guessing” he called it and detailed why Lawrence was a very bad guesser.

At the time Robbie Deans said wryly: “We have to live with the ref’s calls and tonight we didn’t.” When Lawrence reffed the recent game between the Rebels and the Blues, the Rebels captain wondered how on earth he could award the Blues a try that came from breaking off a scrum that had gone through 90. That was the match when Lawrence said, slightly desperately, that it wasn’t easy for him out there either.

Too true. His reffing of the scrum at the weekend was again a joke. Ben Franks was allowed to put his hand on the ground (illegal) and bore in (illegal) and Corey Flynn was allowed to pop up like a piece of toast (illegal). But when the Reds counterparts did the same things they were pinged, presumably on the nonsensical ground that they are not so good at scrimmaging. Where does that end? We won’t penalise Sir Richie for knocking on the ball because he is so good. Sorry, Lawrence did that as well to Will Genia’s comical outrage.

Lawrence’s reffing of the breakdown is no better. The World Cup quarter-final between South Africa and Australia was another accident waiting to happen, because Lawrence had been just as negligent of the laws in creating a turgid Super 15 final. After the World Cup match former WC final ref Andre Watson said: “He didn’t referee the breakdown the way he was supposed to. He just didn’t step in.”(Please note windpomp but I suppose Watson also doesn't know the rules like you think you do? Hahahahhahahahahahahaha)

When he does step in, Lawrence is inconsistent. He penalised Digby Ioane for not releasing at the weekend, but the time frame was so short Lawrence was bound to then ping almost every other attacking player going to ground. Of course he didn’t. And the decisive penalty of the match left Liam Gill justly bewildered. All afternoon the tackler had been given rights to the ball on the ground, except this time. It was a ruck apparently. The IRB should be ashamed because the definition of a ruck is now so fuzzy as to be subjective guesswork.(All ideally to bent nz refs

Ewen Mckenzie, the Reds coach, said after the game: “We average 10 penalties a game and then cop 17-7. So it’s pretty hard to play at their end of the ground.” After the World Cup South Africa captain John Smit, one of the game’s most articulate and fair-minded men, said: “Bryce is not difficult to communicate with, he just doesn’t seem to listen very well. The one positive (of retirement) is that I won’t ever have to be reffed by him again.” The African outrage was so great that Lawrence has yet to take charge of a match involving a South African side this season. (Sorry you need to exclude ou windpomp who thinks poor brycy has had  a raw deal! Its th Boks who lost the game through their poor play  and its unfair to put any blame on poor brycy who was only do his best)

A system that continues to put Lawrence out there despite all the justified criticism has to be rotten. (Well excatly so and we are implicated folks)There are on average over 7 successful penalty goals in the Super 15 matches that Lawrence has had charge of this season. Far too many of those calls are just plain wrong. It is hard not to suspect that Lyndon Bray, the man in charge of Sanzar’s refs, is too friendly to be objective about this.(Another nz oak busy arranging matters)

Mr Lawrence influenced the World Cup to its detriment. He is now doing the same to the Super 15. If the refs’ boss won’t step in, then maybe Sky TV should. They pay the big money. I feel sorry for Mr Lawrence because he is out of his depth and there is absolutely no place for personal abuse in these discussions. But unfortunately his mistakes are continuing to affect a lot of people’s livelihoods and it is time to blow the whistle on the New Zealander and promote an up-and-comer

Excellent stuff Mr Reason  - perhaps ou windpomp might take your views seriously given you are a professional journalist? Hahahahahhahahahaha talk about egg on visog stuff!

Hope you enjoy the article Redsman and feel that nice feeling of being vindicated.

Windpomp will no doubt try and few twists.

Thanks Beeno1 - yes didnt need a crystal ball to see the way this game was going to transpire...

I ended havent to go and mow the lawn than watch my beloved team play last year's finalists because I was yelling too much and scaring kids and Bryce couldnt hear me thru the TV......

Fact is Bryce has a long history I've been onto him for at least 3or4 seasons -

Basically we just want a fair game - if you loose to the better team so be it - but having refs rort your team is just intolerable -

thanks for the article - does give me a sense of satisfaction - only  punching bryce on sunday would have given me more......

Hahahahahahahaha Redsman but glad you took some comfort in the article. These few gainsayers have plenty of egg on their faces right now.

Wonder how long their support for bent refs and brycy can continue. It is clear that the vast majority want fair competent refs where games are decided as far as possible (luck can play a part too) by how well either team played.

All very reasonble stuff and yet we still get some nutters trying to defend the indefensible and siding with the wrongdoers. Amazing really!!

nuked obviously is extremely uncomfortable with the topic. It is very embarrasing to nz so that is understandable.

The fact is nz have blown their cover big time. The genie is out of the bottle. All they can do if they are sensible is reform very quickly.  Can a leopard change his spots is the question.

Wise to keep quiet on the matter nuked. Wiser still to admit the error of your ways and set about reforming!

You've just got to ignore Bean Brain when he has his psychotic episodes nukefree - Can't see any other saffas buying in to his delusions except some queer who doesn't know if he's arthur or martha.

Good for a laugh though to know we're making your life miserable Bean Brain . Now you know how Eric Twatson's reffing was like to us Kiwis so just think of it as karma. Also see you're backing the Chiefs to win this week Mr Bean so i guess you've finally figured out what i've been telling you all year and that is ....2012 is the Year of the Chiefs...

Cheifs will choke NZRU will do everything (and already is doing so with Bryce) to get crud-saders into finals. But For me If not to be Reds back-to-back - go Brumbies - should have beaten Chiefs too if not for some dodgy kiwi reffing AGAIN...

But wouldnt mind to see Bulls or Stormers there too - basically anyone but the cheats that reside east of the Tasman.... ps go the blues.... hahahahaahah

We love to watch rugby being played - not refereeing being the decider of match outcomes.   Once the referee became the center of controvercy, there really is a problem.   Al over the playing countries there are incompetents acting as referees and there are those who blow to see their favoured teams win.   Bryce Lwrence is by far not the only one - but because of his major refereeing blunders - he is at present top of the list.

After all Lawrence was removed as a test panel referee - because he is clueless - as stated in the article, so he is not really a referee that should be used on Super 15 level.   If he wants to continue reffing - he should do so on local provincial level - definitely not on Super 15 level.

That try scored by the Bulls a few weeks back against the Brumbies represented also a major ref blunder - so lets not go for the New Zealanders alone - lets go for all incomptent and biased referees that should be given red cards - instead of the players being carded.   Admittedly Bryce is one of those.

Feeling the heat brycy!!! Hope its hot enough to burn away that mountains of dross.

Our educational system leaves a lot to be desired in many cases but not all. We still have very good section of well educated and intelligent folk here. Our Saffers in nz have no doubt lifted the collective IQ considerably! Bwahahahahahaha

Gotta admit, the Chiefs are looking good at the moment. They have not been plagued by injuries as yet and have not really played the real big guns except an injury depleted Crustaceans. Theres still a long way to go in this compo, so I wouldnt be crowning them Champos just yet. Beat the Reds at home and that will go a long way in cementing your finals berth.

Getting back to Brycie, he's just rubbish and everyone knows it, except a few Kiwi's like Lyndon Brey and  co. We have Marius who provides Brycie with the comfort of companionship and they both should be sacked for biased refereeing! WC quarter final is long gone and I'm over it and now the idiot is destroying other teams in major competetions. Is Brycie still a SANZAR Test referee? Now there's a worry!

"Is Brycie still a SANZAR Test referee? Now there's a worry!"

The stuff of nightmares Green.

How can you drop the nz ref of the year - it would be an insult to nz!  He will probably be used in nz to ensure the home wins?

No Green, I do not know. If you meant to confirm whether he was still a SANZAR ref, then the answer is obvious.  Yes, he is. He has just been involved in the Reds game. Silly question. If you meant to confirm that he was still a test referee, then the answer is no, and it was widely publisized. Silly question. If you wanted to confirm whether he was still a SANZAR test referee, then the answer is no, there is no such thing as a SANZAR test referee. Silly question. It is even causing Beeno nightmares.

I do not like to get involved, just that a stupid question invokes a stupid answer.

Bryce is an incompetent and an inconsistent referee who should not be an a panel higher than club rugby.  It is unfortunate for the fans and fortunate for him that his daddy is in a position where he can influence decisions regarding his favourite offspring.  In ant corporate organisation worth its salt he would have been out of the door long time ago.

Whether the man is crooked or if he favours one team above the other is something no one can say without substantial proof and reams of media and statistical analysis, oh and you may also need the physical “gains” received through the allegations you make.  Until such time as these are on the table, all this is merely speculation; other than the incompetence and inconsistency which is plain for all to see.

Way, deep down he must be a very unhappy person because he probably realises and knows that he is where he is because of who he knows and not on merit as it should be.  The young Glen Jackson (although not perfect) is ten times the referee Bryce pretends to be.
