Ex Supersport

It’s way too early in the season to talk about moments of truth and to bring up all those clichés about this being the time of reckoning, for the Vodacom Super Rugby season really is way too long to be making any pronouncements when the tournament has just reached the third round.(Please note )

However, with the top New Zealand teams so far looking as if they inhabit a different planet to the ones from South Africa, this weekend does provide our first opportunity to gauge whether the above perception has merit or not.

The Kiwi teams have looked good when they play against each other, but he big question is: how will they adjust to the different challenge posed by South African teams? (Indeed they come against defenders that defend)

It often appears that when New Zealand players come up against South Africans, they get drawn into a testosterone battle, and the whole issue of physicality can become more of a focus than it otherwise is.

There can’t be too much doubt that the Kiwis possess the size and the skill at the back to outdo the local teams, but how will the forward battles go? (Yet some oaks want us to pick the smaller backs!! Hhahahahahahha)

In short, everyone has their own view but we will only really get a proper idea once the Chiefs have played against the Stormers, a fixture which is appetizing because it is between the two sides who finished in the top two on last year’s overall log and yet they never got to play each other.

In a sense, this is the final that didn’t happen last year, a match-up that was ruined by the Sharks’ ability to defy common sense in the Cape Town semifinal.

But talking of last year’s play-offs invites a comparison between last year and this, and why some of us, although acknowledging that the New Zealanders are showing outstanding early form, are reluctant to take that as an indication that the balance of power for the 2013 season has been set.

Last year at this time the Kiwis also seemed to be on a different planet, and we wrote as much, and yet when it came semifinal time, there were two South African teams there and two New Zealand teams.(3 ofthe top six were SA sides)

The Sharks, who won’t see any action against a New Zealand team for a couple of weeks yet, aren’t firing their full arsenal at the moment, and neither are the Stormers.

But this weekend’s round of matches, with the Bulls playing against the Blues in Auckland on Sunday morning, will at least tell us whether the summer months have seen the players from “The Land of the Long White Cloud” step up to a different level. (bulle cant normally be taken too seriously when they tour)

Last week wasn’t a good start, for while there were people who lauded the Cheetahs for playing well and stretching the Chiefs in the first half in Hamilton, they ended up losing the game by 40 points.(Yes and we know the reason for that)

So lets clip some kiwi wings begining with the chiefies.

The Kiwi teams have produced the scintillating rugby so far and have really fired, and wondered why no SA posters have posted the obligatory " our team (fill in the blank) will beat you into the ground" comment....and Beeno glad to see you didn't let me down.  But agree that it is too early in competition to make assumptions am more interested in a consistent home/away record to make a judgement.

Hi there Poly. Look its easy to look good against weak defence and that is why the kiwis always look great playing their netball rugby against one another.

Prepare for a tougher examnation at Newlands Poly and thank your stars we are still way off our strongest team.

Chiefies are going doooooown!

Bean Brain when you say going down at Newlands i think you mean the trip going down to Newlands on the bus don't you?

And i'm thinking you mean harlem globetrotters style rugby coz it's you yarpies that are playing like netball girls. Try not to tackle like girls tomorrow though as the Mighty Chiefs will make your not so mighty stormers pay dearly.

Everyones saying the stormers are kak this year Bean Brain so now s yr chance to step up to the plate and hit a home run against the Mighty Chiefs - whereas the Chiefs will be aiming for the regulatory four and the bonus point.

brycy what the wee chiefies aim at and what they will get are not necessarily coincidental. Fancy boy rugby will not do against the Mighty Stormers. You wll need to get stuck in.

This is the calm before the STORM brycy.

Bean Brain such a great smorgasbord of sport this weekend started with the Kiwis beating the World Champs in softball followed by the Canes victory over the hapless Saders,

Next on the menu after those appetisers is the mouth watering main course Bean Brain , The Mighty Chiefs vs the not so mighty stormers. Everyone saying the stormers are dull to watch so hopefully your team won't try and bore us to death...

Nope brycy the idea is to strangle the wee chiefies to death. Watch this space. I think even this depleted side will be too much for the chiefies to handle.

Chiefies going doooooooooown!

bean...bean...bean, stormers are at home but they have a better winning rate away from home, even De villiers knows this two defeats is not a great start compared to chiefs bonus point wins. But hey anything could happen it will be a tough game for both sides Stormers have tight defence, but Chiefs have a lot of fire and skill.and back themselves to attack at will. Good luck

Thanks papa moaner and good luck to you as well. I can t imagine the chiefies beating a full strength Stormers side so this has to be your best chance this season.

Bean Brain so what if you have injuries - so have the Mighty Chiefs with Leonard, Kahui and Robinson out and Cruden playing with a groin strain.  The difference is the Chiefs have fabulous depth and can rotate their team on a weekly basis and still come up with the goods whereas by the sounds of yr pathetic excuses yr team is one dimensional, shallow with no real substance.

This is yr best chance to prove me wrong Bean Brain given yr home advantage so go hard and lets drop all the excuses for a change...
