Poor CC - he fails to understand anything of substance. I am writing about the performance of players in Super 15 and not about the selection of the test team. Slow on the uptake - but let me help him out here.
First of all the Springbok team will be selected based on performance and how he sees the players fitting into the game plan he intends to use. For that purpose there are signs that is significant - for example his request to play Mostert and Du Toit in the number 7 position to see howthey perform,
From that I assume that he has in mind already who should be in the lock position or has at least looked at various options in those positions. What is evident is that in the cas of the locks he probably has three players in mind` as locks and those are Etzebeth, De Jager and Du Toit. Schickerling is a long time option likely to come onto the scene - but his injury is keeping him out at present, I do not think Rassie is considering Mostert at all in the lock position - hence his request for Mostert to play at 7 - where he was not as good as for instance Du Preez and Du Toit, However, we will see how t pans out.
There are other interesting comments he made as well. He goes for De Allende and Kriel all out but has no alternative suggestion as to that combination. I have seen some comments and initially liked Van Rensburg a lot -but something went wrong with the player and he is now selected on the bench - Vorster being considered ahead of him. I also like Etsterhuizen, but on Saturday he was outplayed by De Allende - sow hat is to happen in that case?
I do not like Kriel particularly - but what other options are there? There are maybe Am - Mapoe is a definite no-no - butAm blows hot and cold and when he has stronger opposition it is mostly cold. The question remains who else.
I like his argument as to what we have seen in the past - it reminds me about what we have seen last year of Dreyer at tighthead - yet CC has completely ignored that one and is punting Dreyer again.
However, we are not the selectors and we can discuss the issues as per normal - but inm the end our perspectives may be influenced by outside factors non-related to rugby - like prejudice against certain players, franchise support, etc.
I think we will see within four weeks time where things are going, There may be a few funny selections - but that is to be expected. I think some players like Etzebeth may not even be in the mix - at least not until he recovers from his injury. Weird one that one - he injured his shoulder and his left arm went weak. Until he can get that arm stronger and at least to an acceptable level - he will not be played by the Stormers and obviously not by the Springboks, The latest news is that he is out for another month - but that would mean he has been out of rugby for six months and will obviously not be matchfit - so will Rassie select him? Meyer is known to raid the hospital wards to get players and Coetzee was totally clueless - they would have picked Etzebeth, but Rassie is likely to see things differently.
