In a startling development in French rugby, Pierre Mignoni has resigned as the head coach of Toulon, following a series of disappointing performances in the Top 14 league. The team currently languishes in 13th place, having secured only one victory in the first five matches of the season.
The resignation follows a humiliating 28-0 defeat to Montpellier last Sunday. With the club only managing a narrow win against Vannes, the league's lowest-ranked team, pressure had been mounting on Mignoni. Franck Azéma, who previously led the team from 2021 to 2023, will step in once again to oversee the team's athletic direction.
Toulon's statement revealed the reasons behind Mignoni's departure, stating,
"Pierre Mignoni informed the management of Toulon of his decision to end his mission as director of rugby, which the club accepted. This decision comes in the context of insufficient sporting results since the start of the season."
The statement continued, explaining Mignoni's rationale,
"Faced with this situation, Pierre Mignoni chose to fully assume his responsibilities. After exhausting all available resources, he determined that a change was now necessary to revitalise the professional team. With this decision, he hopes to enable the squad to quickly return to winning ways."
Despite their tough start, Toulon remains only two points away from eighth-placed Clermont, suggesting that a turnaround, under the right leadership, could be feasible. The club’s swift change in leadership underscores a proactive approach to reversing their fortunes this season.
The club also praised Mignoni's contributions during his tenure, noting his impact on the development and structure of the team's sporting project, particularly around the professional sector and the Toulon training program.
With Azéma at the helm, Toulon fans will be hopeful for a swift improvement in form, eyeing a climb up the Top 14 standings as the season progresses.
