'Toupou should have been sent off' .....

.......says Mallett, and he's right: 'There were no arms used in the tackle by the No 3 [Taniela Tupou]. It was high and had force. The tackle went straight into [Craig Barry's] head, and his head spins back there. That is a concussion waiting to happen. 'For Tupou to have been allowed to stay on the field is exactly what is wrong with rugby at the moment. We should not allow that. 'For foul play, you have two assistant refs, the referee himself and the TMO. They can all come in if they see foul play. It is impossible that all four people missed that incident. I don't believe it. If they did not miss it, it was a big mistake not to stop the game, inform the referee and get Tupou off the field. 'It was a great game of rugby. We knew it was going to be close and I am very glad the Stormers finished on the right side of the scoreboard.'

And then there's this from SARugby mag: On Saturday afternoon, the third cricket Test between Australia and South Africa became embroiled in a major ball-tampering controversy. Across the road at the Newlands rugby ground, there was also a controversial talking point early on when Reds tighthead prop Taniela Tupou executed a horrible no-arms tackle on Stormers wing Craig Barry. Tupou used no arms and made forceful impact to the neck and head area of Barry, and yet the clear red-card offence went unpunished by the officials. Referee Marius van der Westhuizen appeared not to spot the dangerous tackle in real-time, while TMO Christie du Preez made no call for the incident to be reviewed. Tupou has been cited and will surely be suspended, but at a time when World Rugby is so determined to reduce such incidents for the safety of players, it’s simply unacceptable that the Reds front-rower got away with it on the field of play. Unfortunately, it also wasn’t the only indiscretion missed by Van der Westhuizen on an evening when plenty of the Reds’ .................... Seems Tupou might get his just deserts.
