I just heard an interesting interview with Gavin Rich, a sports correspondent that has some interesting insight into the Bok team at the moment. It seems that Meyer actually wanted to bench both Matfield and De Villiers for the Samoa game, but feared "losing control of the change room" as a result! These are many of the same senior players that were running the Bok steup in the last world cup under the weak PDV. We all know how our last world cup worked out for us!
He also reported that there has been tension between Meyer and Matfield & De Villiers, because they ignored the game plan Meyer wanted them to play against Japan.
It is Meyers fault that he is in this position with the geriatrics trying to run the team, because they should not have been there in the first place, but Jean and especially Matfield are just as guilty!
This apparent discontent in the Bok squad is not a good for our World Cup aspirations!
Meyer, please get rid of the politics, and select the best team! I have never much liked Matfield, and my opinion of him has now plummeted to an all time low . Jean is a good guy by all accounts, but he is also looking like an African dictator that refuses to relinquish power.

A mutiny so to speak!!!
Poor coach and a weak leader.

Hard to believe Jean is causing problems. Coach should be in control, I can't imagine Hansen having such problems.

Yes I agree ... I can't see a respectful man like Jean being insubordinate.
Matfield and Fourie are known for this type of thing.
Jean is a gentleman!!

Matfiled so often gives the impression he should be running things. Send the show pony packing. He has ruined our team for far, far too long. When will Myer see the light. Bring in Lood - never has a selection been as obvious.
Hansen probably has the same problem trying to get wee mcaaaw, woodcock and melamu to tow the line. Mcaaaw has believed the hype about himself and also thinks he is indespensible. Poor coach dare not drop him.Meyer though is defending matfiled against public opinion as everyone but the lunatic fringe realis e the show pony is no lock.I must take a lot of credit on this board for enligtening former groupies like ou maaaikie and snapster who used to idolise wee victor until my insightful posts finally after years of work opened their eyes.

Its very unfortunate that Jean has been dragged into all this bulle nonsense. We all know Jean conducts himslef like a true WP gentelman. Lets face facts here oaks the whole problem can be laid at the bulle's doorstep!

The situation with Matfield has been known for years. He initially tried to undermine John Smit as captain - he wanted the captaincy for himself. Smith is no angel either and together with Matfield and Du Preez took control of the team while Pieter de Villiers was coach. The result was detrimental to the team performances and the 2011 disastrous WC campaign was the result.
Matfield thought his day was done and in 2011 announced his retirement from international rugby - ie before his pal Meyer was elected as coach. He took up a contract with the Bulls as attack coach - where he could work work another pal as attacking coach of the Bulls,
Meyer immediately after his appointment as coach approach Matfield to return to play rugby - but at the time Matfield was busy with his memoirs and initially Matfield turned down the approach and Meyer than approached Fourie du Preez (circa March 2012) and the latter claimed he was injured and unfit ad declined the invitation to be captain. Meyer then made De Villiers captain 0- but kept on naffing Matfield and Du Preez to return to play international rugby.
Matfield is said to be respected in the changeroom and as a leader. However, indications are otherwise. Matfield had a stormy relationship with Bismarck - which erupted into an open quarrel on Saturday in the game against the Japanese - apparently the main reason for Bismarck's demotion. Matfield caused havoc in the Bulls set-up by carrying change room stories to Ludeke and in a recent report the strife he caused by doing that caused a serious disruption of the Bulls performances since 2013.
Another interesting comment Meyer made when announcing the selection of De Villiers was that De Villiers offered to stand down and be on the bench. Meyer then consulted with the players and they said they wat De Villiers toi stay on as captain. If De Villiers was out of the picture - it was obvious that the captaincy would go to Matfield and clear that the players do not want that one as captain.
Matfield is a disruptive influence in the changeroom is obvious. I can remember clearly an obvious incident in the 2013 WC team - where Matfield on the one side and Jannie and Beast on the other side had a serious argument whilst on the field of play and it was obvious that the problem was lack of lock support for the props. Matfield provides no support in Tight 5 play and trends to stand around in the backline.
The most disastrous selection Meyer ever made was to bring back Matfield into the Springbok squad. Sine he came back the Springboks lost competitiveness in the Tight 5 and the number of losses constantly mounted over the last 14 months mounted.
I am afraid the disruptive influence of Matfield will cause the same result from players just going through the motions tomorrow. The best Meyer can do is to relize that Matfield is a problem in the squad and sent him packing asap.
The same can be said of the fat strain Alberts - who never should have been in the squad anyway.

Beeno
There was a media report on that one and it was evidently with Bismarck on the one side and Matfield and Jean on the other side during the match on Saturday. Matfield is poison in that side and has been for years - but he is Meyer's pal and that remains a serious drawback in that team.

My initial post on this thread was speculative, but after the latest comments by De Villiers it seems to be true! In a recent interview posted on the Supersport website he basically admitted it but blamed the the fact that they had ignored Meyer's instructions on miscommunication. At least the good news is that both he and Matfield have been told if they don't perform in the next game they'll be dropped.
If that were to happen, who would be the best captain? Probably Schalk or Vermeulen would be my guess.
