DSTV today for the first time showed the highlight package of the first Under 20 game played against Argentina.

The following observations are necessary:-

*    The outstanding player of the day was Duhan van der Merwe - he was an absolute star and toyed with the opposition every time he got the ball.  Big and very powerful and fast.

*   The flyhalf was Van der Walt - he showed one thing that none of the SA senior flyhalfs with the exception of Goosen, Lambie, Boshoff and Pollard showed - namely the ability to make decisions and gather balls passed to him while on the move.

*   The second outstanding player was Du Plessis

*   The forwards were very strong and Jakkals and Janse van Rensburg stood out as very big and strong - with good ball handling skills as well.

Van der Walt is the back up flyhalf in the WC squad and - Pollard is the first chocie flyhalf.

Some of the players in the squad t go to the WC are playing Super 15 or Vodacom Cup rugby and were not available for the game.

The second match highlight package was also shown this morning.  The commentators said it was a stronger team - and Theron said that it comprises 6 of the 7 first choice backline players.
From what i have seen the backline players in the first match from an attacking perspective performed better than those in the second match.   The handling was not effective enough and I was a bit disappointed in what I saw of Esterhuizen - he played a crash ball game,  which affected backline play detrimentally.
Theron was somewhat worried after the performance and I think they realize that the team - and especially the backline - did not perform as expected.  The forwards were far too strong a unit for the Argentinians and that swung the game - especially in the second half - when they brought on subs with more clout than they had in the first half.

Thanks for the info, Duhan Van Der Merwe is starting again against the Argentinians for the 3rd match so lets hope he shines again and forces Theron to include him in the JWC squad

The Under 20 team for tomorrow is the following:=
15 - Jessie Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
14 - Sergeal Petersen (EP Kings)
13 - Dan Kriel (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
12 - Andre Esterhuizen (Cell C Sharks)
11 - Duhan van der Merwe (SARU contracted)
10 - Jean-Luc du Plessis (Cell C Sharks)
9 - JP Smith (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
8 - Aidon Davis (EP Kings)
7 - Jean-Luc du Preez (Cell C Sharks)
6 - Victor Sekekete (Golden Lions)
5 - Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
4 - Abongile Nontonkwane (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
3 - Wilco Louw (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
2 - Corniel Els (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
1 - Pierre Schoeman (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
There is one thing I cannot understand about the U20 WC squad it is why Duhan van der Merwe is on a SARU contract - but not included in the squad as announced.  Matter of fact he is the only Under 20 player in the the team and the squad with a  SARU contract.     .

I think it may have something to do with his last injury, maybe Theron didn't want to risk him. But then another question can be asked, why has he had such a prominent role against Argentina.

I think Theron is going to take him to the WC through there back door - basically blaming an injury for a change.  It is futile to leave your best backline player out of the squad.
