Update on Sam Cane. Broken neck

Page said the 26-year-old would be sidelined for "several months", ruling him out of the All Blacks' end-of-season tour, which includes Tests against Australia, Japan, England, Ireland and Italy.

He said Cane had surgery to stabilise the injury and would remain in Pretoria this week.

"It'll probably take about three months for the bone to get strong, we'll just take it step by step," he told reporters.

"The operation is just to keep everything in the right place so the bone can heal of its own accord."

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said he expected the Rugby World Cup winning loose forward, who has played 60 Tests, to return to top-level rugby.

"It's expected he's going to make a full recovery and be back playing," he said.

Honestly, it gets me pretty cut up when things like this happen to any player.

Thank the lord he isnt paralysed and will make a recovery.

Remember Schalk alsk had a serious neck injury.

Not sure if you guys remember Quinton van Jaarsveld. Similar story. Broke his neck playing for his school side. Paralysed from the neck down. he could move his pinkies only.

He was a r egular author on sarugby.com back in the day and has gone on to become a well known sports reporter.

Also a great guy. Worked quite a lot with him.

The worst sports injury I have ever seen in my life.

One of the funniest was for cricket at my highschool. We had a Bangladeshi student who was an excellent batsman. Knocked someone clean out with a canon strike. Thankfully I got off lightly (rugby). Two sprained ankles and black eye. 

I feel my dexterity saved my skin a few times with tangled legs etc. 

Back to big Sam. I hope he makes a speedy and flawless recovery. I remember our fears when Schalk broke his neck. Those dreaded words from Jake: "I don't want to jump to conclusions, but he my never play again". Big Joe also had a C5 and C6 vertebrae fusion surgery the same year. We had a lot of injuries that year. Habana and Jean cracked ribs, Gurthro and another (Joubert?) broken hands and a dozen more. So, I'm sure he'll be back to his best. Probably the worst part of coming back from an injury is the knock it takes to your sense of invincibility, especially for an athlete.
