The track and field sensation so far....a big World record, in the Olympic final.....running in the outside lane. A repeat of last year's Worlds, he floated away from James and Merritt down the straight, seemingly running without effort.
They had a nice piece on his 74 year old coach on US tv, she looks like a nice Afrikaans tannie!
Great story!

...yea I saw the SA long jumper - he wasn't half bad a neither...Van Neikerk is being described as the athlete that almost upstaged Bolt...I hear he's from Capetown just down the road from Bean Brain's home in Monkeyland...

"Thank goodness for quotas......"
We would never had heard of him under the old regime, matter of fact there's many the world could have known but were locked out by Apartheid. Still, the vast majority on here would love to see that regime back in power.

Mooooo la la la obviously doesn't know that Van Niekerk was a merit selection which is what non racist folk here in Sa favour. The vast majority here would favour a non racist SA dense denise.

I read today in the Wall Street Journal of all places, that Wade is the only runner in history to crack 10 seconds in the 100, 20 in the 200 and 44 in the 400. A nice little accomplishment.....and a very exclusive club of one.

Denny, it is indeed sad that he would not have been given the opportunity under the previous regime! Sadly, the new regime also impedes on the opportunities of some athletes today. Please also note that the vast majority of SA gave FW the mandate to abolish Apartheid. I think it's unfair to presume that the "vast majority" of the posters on this site would welcome the old Nats regime back.I'm not trying to get in your hair here, but I think quota's has done more harm to sports in SA, than a fcked up Apartheid system. At least we knew who the bad guys were back then, now everybody gets to blame everybody else!

FYI have a look at this link
http://www.athleticsclipboard.co.za/athletics-news/eight-times-sprint-champion-cecil-blows/
Then google Kenny Roman.
Across the great divide there would be many, many more who would have suffered the same fate under Apartheid. I'm not sure how you can say that Apartheid was better than the current transformation policy when you and millions of other South Africans didn't get the opportunity to even know two world class athletes. Van Niekerk serves to highlight a grave and irreparable injustice.

OK, Denny. That came out wrong. Sorry for the blunder. The forced Q here and there, with unlucky player missing out, is still way better than 80% of the populace forced out. I'm sure the good athletes of colour we know of is only the tip of the iceberg. What pisses me off in the new system, is merited POC pllayers being labled as Q's due to the system. ..being allowed to compete under a perception created that they're actually not good enough. That's unfair.

I'm in total disagreement with the system but that said I don't have a solution. There is something unnatural about a player being selected on colour or rejected on colour. My thoughts are that at national level selection should be based on the very best available . Problem you have is that the far left is making a lot of noise about the proportion of black as to white players in the team and because it's a numbers game with regards to votes the decision based on majority rules became mandatory of 50% POC. It won't stop there either. Look the whole thing could have turned into a positive if handled properly because now, instead of having 25% of the population competing for a spot in the team there'd be thousands. The real solution lies at fixing grassroot level, the political solution is one of numbers and votes. I don't see this changing while the Pollies control the game. The times they are a changing....kick and scream all you like the Politicos rule selections.

Still crying I see.
It makes no difference. Past is past. Nothing we can do about it.
The injustices of today need to be addressed. This can still be sorted.
Selecting quotas to replace the deserving is unfair. We're supposed to be a new democracy.
Now wipe away the tears, calm the quivering lip and still the hysterical wailing ...
