Ruan Venter, sidelined with a knee injury, emphasizes the importance of victories in South African derbies for the Lions' prospects in the United Rugby Championship (URC). He spotlights the upcoming Jukskei derby against the Bulls at Loftus as a pivotal clash. Last season, the Lions’ triumph over the Bulls by a score of 43-33 at this venue marked a turning point, leading them to win the SA Shield title and secure a playoff spot.
Venter, who played a crucial role as openside flank in that memorable victory, reflects on the singular intensity of derby matches within the URC framework. He points out that these games are not just about regional bragging rights but are also the most physically demanding clashes on the calendar.
“The SA derbies in the URC are the most special games; they’re the ones you want to play, and they are the most physical,” Venter told News24. “To play the Bulls at Loftus, you really can’t describe it; you know it’s going to be a hard, physical battle.”
The Lions notched four wins out of six derby matches last season, a record that Venter believes was central to their overall success. He asserts that dominating these key matchups is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the league.
“If you win your SA derbies, you are in the mix,” he said.
Despite his current rehabilitation following a knee injury sustained in May, Venter remains closely connected to the team's progress. He has been encouraged by the Lions’ performance in the early stages of the season, where they’ve secured nine log points from two games.
Venter commented on the team’s form, acknowledging there’s room for improvement in their performances despite their winning start.
“We have worked really hard and we have had a good start to the season,” he said. “Not the best performances, but as long as you’re winning, we should be good.”
This season's aspirations are high for the Lions, and a repeat of last year’s victory against the Bulls in Pretoria could again serve as a catalyst for a successful campaign in the URC.
