Vermeulen out of the test on Saturday
If you've ever played the game, you would have been injured at one time or another and should know this to be fact.
A neck injury is usually very serious and could cost you your life. Of course one would be a little trepid to go in with all guns blazing.
It takes a little time to regain one's confidence ... ask Schalk Burger.
Vermeulen will be back. It is good that he sits out now.

With respect - Burger was a young player when he had his neck injury and he had time on his side to recover and get over the injury - Vermeulen is no Spring chicken and recovery time is definitely not on his side. I am a great Vermeulen supporter - has always been - but am not sure he will get back into form.
I had a neck fusion operation and the operation was done by a Dr Stefan Joubert - one of the best in the world - he was a guest lecturer at Yale University for three months before he was available to operate on me. At the time he mentioned to e that he operated on Van Biljon as an example of one of the players he treated. Remember Van Biljon - the hooker - he was top class before the operation and vanished from sight subsequently.
Joubert also did the Vermeulen operation - but am afraid that as you mentioned it has a psychological impact as well. The pain and suffering a person goes through before the operation is terrible. I was given for example a prescription pain killer before the operation - since I selected to wait for Dr Jobert to return to SA - was supposed to take one pill every three hours - I ended up taking 2 tablets every hour and he pain was still there. I suppose it is enough to scare of players for life.
Incidentally another player with a broken neck rugby injury is Jakkals Schickerling – the lock of the Stormers. He was only 20 when he broke his neck – but he seems to make a comeback as well. Is it a case of the young getting over adversities and the older players being more careful?Obviously a young body recovers easier. Still that doesn't mean that there's no hope for Duane.
I am prepared to give him a chance. It would be wonderful if he can make it back successfully. If he decides to call it a day then so be it ... but until then I'm holding thumbs.
F0k but your a negative person. Always whining about something or another. Are you like this all the time ? You must be hell at a party.
