I read an article ages ago where Bakkies said when they were around 21-22 years old, Matfield was actually heavier than him (Bakkies).  When they became a combination they conditioned to become specialists at 4 and 5 respectively.
Also, Matfield could bench press more than just about anyone in the team.

Dave in his book Matfield stated himself that his playing weight was circa 107 kgs.

Mostert's weight remains at 112 kgs.   I do think he really is physically-deficient to be a lock.  He is a hard but ineffective worker.   I think he had his days in the test team and will not see the Green Jersey again.

Matfield might have started at 107kg and ended at that weight but at his peak he had muscled up to 115kg. Mostert is 8 to 10kg too light for a modern test lock

Matfield had unproportionaly thin legs like a kiewiet, hence his nickname, but he was no midget for shure. Strong upper body.
