The Major League Rugby (MLR) scene is set to ignite with the debut of the California Legion, a blend of the former San Diego Legion and Rugby Football Club Los Angeles. Steering the team into the 2026 season are ex-Wallabies Stephen Hoiles and Dave Dennis, now confirmed as part of the Legion’s coaching arsenal. Hoiles steps up as head coach with Dennis as his defensive strategist.

Adam Freier, the Legion's chief executive and himself a former Wallabies hooker, expressed his vision for the team: "From day one, our ambition has been to build a world-class rugby programme that represents California." He emphasized the importance of a coaching team that brings a winning formula, developmental expertise, and community engagement. "This group delivers that," Freier affirmed.

Hoiles, with 16 caps for Australia and a substantial coaching stint in MLR, including a championship win with the LA Giltinis, brings a wealth of experience and a fresh vision to the newly formed team. "Our focus will be on standards, connection, and attacking clarity," Hoiles mentioned, highlighting his strategy for success in the upcoming season.

Dave Dennis, not far behind, brings his own flair to the table. With 18 Test appearances for Australia and leadership roles that led teams to Super Rugby and MLR titles, Dennis's focus will be on "defensive cohesion, collective effort, and forward-led support structures."

"Our ambition has been to build a world-class rugby programme that represents California."

The coaching staff also includes Dave Clancy and Todd Thornley, both recognized for their respective roles in MLR and collegiate rugby, enhancing the team’s strategic depth. Sebastian Pearson rounds out the team, tasked with leading strength, conditioning, and performance.

With the MLR season approaching, Freier’s confidence is palpable. "This staff blends experience, innovation, and a genuine passion for American rugby," he stated, underscoring the holistic approach of integrating professional and collegiate talent pathways as a strategy for sustained success and growth.

"Our focus will be on standards, connection, and attacking clarity."

As California Legion gears up for its first crack at the MLR title, the amalgamation of seasoned expertise and ambitious strategy under the California sun could very well set new benchmarks in the league and beyond.
