The Wallabies are set to clash with the All Blacks in the pool stage of the Rugby World Cup for the first time ever, a historic pairing drawn for the 2027 tournament. Joining them in Pool A are newcomers Hong Kong China and Chile, as part of a revamped 24-team, six-pool format. With the home ground advantage, the Wallabies face a daunting path; a victory over the All Blacks could pit them against heavyweights like the Springboks and potentially France in the later rounds. Alternatively, a second-place finish in their pool might lead them through a slightly less intimidating route facing the likes of Japan and possibly England or Argentina/Ireland later on.

Wallabies captain Harry Wilson expressed his enthusiasm about the draw, particularly about facing their fierce rivals, New Zealand.

"We’re obviously stoked to get the All Blacks. They’re a team we love versing, we verse them quite a lot. In a World Cup, if you want to win it, you’ve got to beat the best teams and they’re obviously one of the top teams in the world."

Despite a current 11-test losing streak against the All Blacks, Wilson remains optimistic. "Obviously that’s been disappointing but this year in both tests we had opportunities," he remarked. "The game was there with 15 minutes to go and we didn’t nail them. Hopefully, where we’re going as a team we can keep improving and in the next year or two start winning some of those big moments which we haven’t won so far." He added, "I know as a group, we know we can beat them. We’ve shown to ourselves how capable we are but we’ve just got to pull together for 80 minutes."

Looking further ahead, a potential quarter-final against the Springboks looms large.

"There’s a lot of potential paths you can go down, but if we get the Springboks in a quarter-final, it’ll be exciting. It’s a challenge which we’re going to have to be ready for."

Wilson also cautioned against underestimating Hong Kong China, a newcomer on the World Cup stage, emphasizing the importance of being well-prepared.

Joe Schmidt, Wallabies' head coach, shared his anticipation for the challenges ahead, particularly the matches against Chile and Hong Kong China. "It’s really exciting. The Wallabies will play [New Zealand] four times in the lead-up, and it gives you a great opportunity to really plot a path to get up and organize for that game," Schmidt said. He acknowledged the need to maintain performance levels, "Chile and Hong Kong China, they’re two newcomers that will challenge you in a different way; challenge you to keep that level of performance to a certain height so that when you hit the round of 16, you hit the ground running."

The stakes are high and the path uncertain, but the Wallabies are gearing up for what promises to be a thrilling World Cup campaign.
