Say what you will about Suncorp , its still the best ground to watch footy at bar none ! And I've been to a few starting with Carlaw Park when I was just a Warlad ! Easy to get to and in and out of ,short wait for food booze and toilets and close to the action !
Like last year I lashed out on a Platinum ticket [ actualy it was a fathers day gift ] front row not far from halfway.
Yea I did find myself surrounded by the Phillistine hordes of wallies and boks fans ,still I did fear no evil mine All Black jumper being able to ward off all the evil eyes cast my way ! Actually the saffas and wallies fans were pretty good sports some good banter although I did seem to cop a bit more than the other fans did , dunno why tho ?
Was trying to put up some video from my ipad but technical problems arose [ no clever kids to show dad how all that new fangled techy stuff works ! ] ah well hard to jump up and down drink beer and blog all at the same time !
The wallies fans werent sure if I was just taking the piss when I said I was barracking for their boys ! The Bok fans werent all that confident of a win till after the second try [ which was when some wallies fans started to drift away ! } but the aussie bloke next to me nearly blew a gasket when the Wallies turned down a shot at goal which would have brought them within 4 points , couldnt get my head around that either .
But not taking easy points when the gap was small was indicitive of the Wallies lack of rugger nous .At their best I remember watching Eales and his boys and they would be chivvying each other along ,talking and relaying info and generally keeping everyone in the loop .
Not this team ,quiet ,playing like they were all in their own little world ,At the set pieces I got the impression that they may as well have head phones on grooving to their own beat all caught up in their own head space wishing they were somewhere else maybe ? My impression anyway ,these boys [ half the problem right there " Boys " ] were sorely lacking leadership ,direction and unity of purpose each of them an island unto himself .
It became quite sad to see the pain on the faces of Wallies fans , glad I'm an ABS fan but seeing as how I was barracking for their boys I got an inkling of how infuriating and frustrating it must be to support the Wallies .And the Bok fans at least until the 60th minute didnt care much for HM and his selections either !
10 mins to go and not a wallies fan within cooie , sorta cant blame em but still to the bitter end me eh ?
Happy Bok Fans ! Some bugger behind me roars "ABS next " his mates shout him down in Afrkaans and roll their eyes , their mate smiles with a sheepish grin and heads for the exit .
I sit there for a minute as the ground empties and see those poor young wallies players absolutely shattered , well some of them I notice JOC being his usual chummy self with the opposition and it makes me feel a bit uneasy ,that this guy and a few others is becoming to comfortable with losing ,not a good look .
Not a game I will watch on TV later , I never do for some reason ,maybe for good or for ill I prefer to keep my impressions of the game as they are ,to see endless replays and close ups makes it seem like some other game I guess ,not mine at all .
On the train home a very subdued aussie crowd , I hear the excited chatter of bok fans here and there mostly in Afrikaans , they dont want to say anything to upset the wallies fans maybe ? and probably a good thing .Old bloke next to me sighs and says he's no where near drunk enough to handle this bullshit , I'm inclined to agree .
