Washed up Whitelock renews his contract

I was for years one of the main admirers of  Sam Whitelock - but he has lost his performance record in the last two years and became a very average lock.   Rermember the test in Johannesburg when he took a line-out ball from Matfield and nearly caused the Springboks to lose the game - that shows his value as a player in years gone by.

The fact that Whitelkock is not sought after by NH Clubs is an indication that he is not the player he used to be.   

Happy to see him signing a contract with the All Blacks up to 2023 - by then he will be much poorer a player than he already is. 

So you know for a fact that no foreign clubs were chasing him, you do know that there is more than just money that these guys look for.

Is he as good as he was 4 years ago, maybe not but he is still one of the top locks in the world. I am more than happy that he has commited to NZ rugby.

And he is an inspirational captain

I am sure fans all around the world can't contain their excitement. 

Very nice to show how much respect  and awe that he is held around the world.

If nz rate the pap whitelock as a great player they don't know what greatness is. 

Great locks are guys like Bakkies Botha and Eben. 

Forget about the pansies like  Wee matfiled and wee whitelock. Okay I have concede whitelock is a better lock than matfiled but then who isn't. Hahahahaha.

Please don't trouble me with pansy locks. We suffered with matfiled for ages. I don't mind the kbbs fanticising about pap whitelock but let's not partake of the same folly ever again. 

Always remember we need a tight 5 not a tight 4. I managed to teach ou maAaAikie this after many years so if he can learn the lesson I taught him about the tight 4 danger most here apart from rooitwit, sharktwit and Crusader twit could actually grasp the concept. 

Whitelock hasn't seen any decent form for ages now ... why bother keeping him?

CC please no good advice to the kiwis. Much better they extol whitelock to the heavens and convince themselves that fans all round the world are overcome with excitement about his staying in nz. The kiws can be sooo funny!

If you want proof just look at the 2 best players to ever lace on rugby boots McCaw and Carter. They could have earned vastly more by going North. 

But they wanted to play for the very best, Sam is obviously of the same character and exactly the type of person I want playing for us as you know you will get 110% and he is not there just for the money.

Something that the Boks desperately need to get them back to 2nd. The biggest thing stopping this is the fact your country is a mess and i can see why they want out.

I am happy to see that there are still members like Rooinek and CF on site that insists that reutation and not present performance is the norm for player selection.

I do not want to knock their statements down - but has a question to ask Rooinek -  if Whitelock is the top lock in the world do you have him in your fantasy teams and if not - why not.

He beat Matfield in 2014 on numerous occasions and I think you should amplify the statement as to Matfield - by stating clearly that after 2011  he was the best flyhalf in the world until 2016 when his performances started showing a decline in excellence/ 

Actually ... his average points per match in fantasy rugby doesn't warrant his price. That money can be put to better use elsewhere.

He may have been one of the best in the world ... back in his day ...but he certainly isn't within the top 10 now.

He has been retained because of loyalty and not because of what he can contribute.
