Willie Le Roux, the most experienced back in South Africa’s squad, will play just three Rugby Championship matches and one Test in November under a deal agreed with Wasps, his Gallagher Premiership club, RugbyPass can reveal.

Le Roux’s international rugby career has been revived by the arrival of Rassie Erasmus as Springboks coach and the full back was recalled for the Test series win over England in June following an outstanding campaign for Wasps.

When Dai Young, the Wasps director of rugby, signed Le Roux, the full back’s international career had reached a natural end, however, a combination of a new regime in charge of the Springboks and the eye-catching rugby produced in the English season dramatically changed the situation. Now, Le Roux , who has won 44 caps, provides much needed experience to a youthful Springboks backline that will have to do without his talents after the double header with Argentina which kicks off their Rugby Championship campaign on August 18 in Durban – his 29th birthday- with the return in Mendoza a week later and the match with Australia on September 8.

Le Roux, who made his debut for the club in March last year, will then return to Wasps having missed the Premiership games with Worcester, Exeter and Leicester, with Young happy to agree to release his first choice full back for one of the Springboks November tests. If Le Roux remained with the Springboks for the entire Championship he would miss six Premiership matches and only return just before the European Champions Cup begins.

Young is one of the main reasons Le Roux was recalled by South Africa, having met with Erasmus and put forward a compelling case for a Test return for his multi-talented full back.

Young, who is currently overseeing Wasps training week in Portugal, told RugbyPass: “You could ask the question; If Willie had been playing in a Waspsteam producing rubbish rugby would he have been recalled? There is no doubt that your style of play helped push his case for a Test recall and we are always delighted when one of our players gets international recognition. However, the fact is that when we signed Willie we didn’t expect him to be playing for South Africa, but he goes with our best wishes.

“Willie is likely to miss our first three Premiership matches and we have worked this out through discussions with everyone involved. It is great that he is back in Test rugby and with a change of coach, Willie wanted to be part of it again. Willie will be back for three Premiership games leading into the European matches and he may go back for one more game with South Africa so the maximum games he will miss for Wasps will be four.

“Rassie has been good to deal with and every player wants to play Test rugby if they have that opportunity and if there was a different regime in charge of South Africa then I don’t know if Willie would have wanted to continue. The World Cup in Japan next year is a massive draw and we have seen players getting back involved with Australia. If this was the first year of the four-year World Cup cycle that may not be the case.

“We haven’t had a fight about this because we saw the writing on the wall in June when he returned for South Africa in the series with England and did well. Prior to the change in coach, we had never had any contact with South Africa about players in our squad.”

Young believes his squad can cater for the loss of Le Roux in those opening three games with Rob Miller ready to take over at No15 while Jimmy Gopperth can also play in that role, along with New ZealandSevens player Ambrose Curtis who has arrived to bolster the backline options, which include All Black No10 Lima Sopoaga, who has replaced Danny Cipriani, now a Gloucester player.

South Africa are set to use the uncapped Stormers No10 Damian Willemse at full back during the Rugby Championship to offer an alternative to Le Roux.

Dai Young? As in better to burn out than fade away? Hur hur.

Well, that's a pretty big blow. I see Brycy mentioned it elsewhere too. We're going to be very vulnerable at the back and it removes a lot of our attacking depth.

How can a pathetic club rugby team decide which games Leroux plays at test level. It is so frustrating to see Northern Hemisphere teams dictate terms- when world rugby have decided that players must be made available for test rugby

Move Jesse Kriel to fullback, I think he plays better there anyway.

It's an inevitability in sports that domestic teams hold power over internationals. That's where they earn their money. Internationals are just a perk by comparison.

Bluebok, I agree fully with you. What's Lambie doing thee days? We do have options. Kriel couldn't be any worse than he is at centre.

Lurker

There are World Rugby rules forcing clubs to release players for test series and any different agreement is null and void.   I do not think an agreement like the above would hold if challenged and doubts whether Erasmus could do that type of deal without being in contravention of the Rules.

Vermeulen was in  different situation - he decided himself not to make him available for the RC tests and there is no rules to force him to do so.   Any agreement between coaches to the contrary of the Rules would create a precedent with serious consequences for all test teams and will not be acceptable to World Rugby.

Who says that Wasps were dictating to SARU? If Rassie wanted Le Roux for all the games who could have fallen back on the WR rules. He chose not to. Easy peasy. No agreement would automatically be null and void. The rules only determine who has the control over the players at which periods in time.

Balls - you were the one who swore the RC is outside the World Rugby Rules and where there is a breach - like implied in the above report - it has serious consequences for all test teams.   Erasmus is not a fool and he has not made any comment on the issue - so to assume there was a deal without his comment is BS.

The last three RC tests are the most difficult of all the tests played - ie two against the AB;s and one against Australia.   Erasmus would not be so foolish  to release his second best player for such a deal.   So we will have to wait and see what actually happened.

I will admit it only when I see it happening.

Maybe the following from News24 clarifies the issue:-

"The Springboks will manage the game time of fullback Willie le Roux during the upcoming Rugby Championship.

While the 28-year-old is very much the first-choice No 15 for the Boks after impressive performances in the June Tests against England, he will play a limited role in this year's Rugby Championship.

Much of that has to do with Bok coach Rassie Erasmus's dealings with English club Wasps, who start their season in three weeks, but there is more to it than that.

Sport24 understands that Le Roux is available for all six Rugby Championship Test matches, but that he will be given some time on the sidelines.

Erasmus is understood to be keen on fielding 20-year-old Damian Willemse at fullback when Le Roux is rested and the coach is encouraging Le Roux to mentor the Stormers youngster throughout the tournament.

Rugby Pass reported on Tuesday that Le Roux would only participate in three Rugby Championship matches.

"Rassie has been good to deal with and every player wants to play Test rugby if they have that opportunity and if there was a different regime in charge of South Africa then I don’t know if Willie would have wanted to continue," the website quoted Wasps director of rugby Dai Young as saying.

"The World Cup in Japan next year is a massive draw and we have seen players getting back involved with Australia. If this was the first year of the four-year World Cup cycle that may not be the case."

The Boks kick off their Rugby Championship campaign next Saturday when they host Argentina in Durban."

The above article clarifies the issue and mention that Le Roux's playing time will be managed playing Willemse in some cases.   Not a word about him being released to play for Waps during the series.

Another piece of BS by Lurker and co - but that is to be expected from that lot.

The Kriel to fullback move is a gamble, we were saved by Willie during the June series because of his playmaking abilities and Kriel doesn't have that in his arsenal. There are no benefits to him being at fullback apart from him not being at 13, and this is due to him being defensively poor which at fullback will still be a problem. I'd much prefer Willemse, who is more of a playmaker with a better boot on him than both Willie and Kriel, this also benefits Willemse development.

How do you square this up? Maaikie says: “Erasmus is not a fool and he has not made any comment on the issue - so to assume there was a deal without his comment is BS.” And then he post an article stating: “Much of that has to do with Bok coach Rassie Erasmus's dealings with English club Wasps, who start their season in three weeks...”

Dofdoos
Do you understand English at all?   I said we must wait for the response of Erasmus and what is written above by me is not what you and the other dofdoos partner wrote.
There is no chance that Le Roux would return to play for Wasps as Lurker wrote above.  Being rested does not mean he could go off and play for Wasps.   I know you are dim - but do you have to display it so clearly.

I have not argued. I have not attacked you. I have not insulted you. I have not contradicted or tried to contradict anything. I just asked you to square up two contradictions.

There is no contradictions to be explained.   If Wasps asked Erasmus to rest Le Roux - it dioes not mean there is an agreement on the issue - merely a request which Erasmus may consider or may not.

What is clear is that Erasmus is trying to build up a squad and he could rest Le Roux to try out other players at full back.

I think there may be two rest days for Le Roux - namely the away test against Argen tina and the home test against Australia

Aaaaaaaaaaand there we go again. We had an old math teacher who could spot obfuscation a mile away. Whenever one would start running around in circles, like you always do, he would say: “Hang on, you are now traveling from Pofadder to Aggeneys via De Aar”.

Well if that article is anything to go by, Willemse is clearly in Rassies plans for the future. Not a bad thing. Still, it does not make sense to me that Willie would opt not to play in the biggest games of the Bok calendar. I thought that was what rugby players lived for? Maybe he and Vermeulen are just trying to preserve themselves for the WC next year, and have opted to play less intense rugga to further that cause .

The less rugby they play this year the better it is for SA in the long run, they're not the sort of players that take long to fit into the team.
