Sure he is a superb runner, and a worthy WR holder in the 400 metres. But he isn't going to go much faster in the 200.....he isn't a power sprinter type. Johnson was. If anything Wayde looks more like a rare 400/800 metres type....he holds his pace well over longer distances.
..
It was a great effort, the defining challenge of the Worlds this time around and so nearly successful. But face it the winning time is slower than the guys were running 50 years ago. This was a very poor 200 metres field and if Wayde never made it this time, the signs aren't good.
..
He is a perfect 400 metres runner, his quest for the 200 is going to end in frustration and perhaps negate his full potential in the 400.

I know it doesn't seem possible, but it looks like Moffie knows even less about athletics than he knows about rugby!
You go Wayde! The double will come. The only human being to run under 10 seconds in the 100m, under 20 seconds in the 200m and under 44 seconds in the 400m.

Johnson brought the record down to 19,32 in 1996,breaking the old 19,72 set 17 years prior.
Bolt has now on 19,19 that's gonna last a long time.

Talk about a complete inability to see the obvious....it was a low quality 200 metres. Wade lucked into the poorest 200 metres field for at least 10 years and couldn't make it happen. At 25 he isn't going to go any faster....live with it.
..
He should remain a 400 metres specialist.

No idea how many races one should run or how much affect it has though, so.

Wayde is definitely no Michael Johnson . . . and thank goodness for that!
Apart from the fact that Wayde beats Johnson hands down in the 100m, 300m and 400m, Wayde also takes his losses like a man. He finishes his races, celebrates whatever medal he wins and congratulates his oppononet.
In stark contrast Michael Johnson was a sore loser who always faked an injury whenever it looked like he might get beaten and stormed off the track like a spoilt child. He hasn't got a single silver or bronze medal in major events and that's not because he always won, it's because he couldn't handle getting beaten and would always clutch his hamstring and pull up when he realized he was going to lose.
He was also so full of himself that he even wore those ridiculous golden boots at that one Olympics. Man, I wonder if he realized how stupid he looked? Don't think I've ever seen Wayde showboating or acting like a big-shot. He's a humble and grounded young man.
Thank goodness he's no Michael Johnson!

400 ...Johnson 43.18/ Wade 43.03

Combined Johnson 52.50/ Wade 52.87

Yes and Michael Johnson held the world 400 metres record for 17 years and the world 200 metres record for 12 years....in fact he was the record holder in both from1999 to 2008. And his 200 is better than Wade's by a greater margin than Wade beat his 400 WR.
...
This discussion started with a speculation that van Niekerk is not going to be nearly as dominant at 200 metres and the effort involved could detract from his 400 performance. But apparently that's disloyal....it's the same old trait that doesn't tolerate any objective analysis of our sportsmen....parochial bias which ends badly.

All the athletes mentioned are great.
They are a lot faster than any of us.
Now the SA guy (van Niekerk) would have been unplaced in the 200 final if Bolt and the Canadian guy was fit to run.
So we can always justify our argument but in fairness to run in the heats for the 400 and 200 and after all that still, produce a top performance is difficult.
Proud to see the SA athletes performing well, plus winning numerous medals and quite a few made it to their specific final.
Canada spends millions and millions of dollars supporting the athletes and as usual, they seldom get the medals.
It is actually painful to watch the Olympics or World champs on Canadian TV.They spend precious minutes building up the athletes and when they partake in their particular events they fall flat and the excuses roll in.
Remember guys van Niekerk holds the world record and is the Olympic champion more than what most if not all of us ever achieved.
Trust he continues to amaze us with his athletic ability for many years.

Wayde Van Niekerk broke Johnson's 400m world record that was expected not to be broken for ages. So at 400m he is the better of the two. At 200m, Johnson was the better athlete, although Wayde has only now started to try and specialize in that event. Still the accolades must go to Johnson. It is very difficult to say who is/was the better athlete, because the strength of competition was vastly different, the quality and availability of training resources and a number of other variable factors that can sway the argument. Wayde still has time to improve and the record books may well look different by the end of his career. They are/were great in different era's and it is impossible to say what would have happened had they raced together.

Well, it's easier to compare different eras in athletics than it is to compare rugby players, cricketers or footballers from different eras. At least with athletics you can work on the times of the runners . . . and right now it's 3-1 to Wayde van Niekerk. He beats Michael Johnson in the 100m, 300m and 400m. It's just the 200m where Johnson still has an edge.
The other important difference as I said further up the thread is that Wayde is a humble guy who is always gracious in defeat or victory while Michael Johnson was a big-headed twat who faked an injury every time he saw he might lose.

Add their best times for both races and Johnson wiins by almost half a second......add the years they have held a world record Johnson beats Wade by 29 to 1. Wade is a nice chap for sure, but as an athlete he has a long way to go to match Johnson's achievements.

Johnson was great ... his record remained as the best ever for many a year ... and then it was broken ... by a man that just so happen to be quicker over the same distance.
Not sure what all the fuss is about but from where I'm sitting the quicker time belongs to the better athlete ... and that athlete is Wayde van Niekerk.

The quicker athlete.....not over the 200 metres is what the'fuss is about'.

Then perhaps you should have titled your thread "Wayde van Niekerk no Michael Johnson over 200m.
You didn't and so once again you end up made a tottie of yourself.

Wrong again Turncoat....Michael Johnson is known in athletic circles for his ability in both races....200 and 400. Wade van Niekerk is trying to do the double. To anybody who has followed athletics the meaning is perfectly clear. What is stupid is your trying to start yet another spat when you are so bad at it.
