Wayne Smith is weighing up whether on not he will return to the Chiefs next year.
The former All Blacks coach came on board with the defending champions initially in a short-term, part-time capacity in 2012, but has naturally since thrown all his energy into to the role.
The franchise has reaped the benefits of Smith's extensive expertise and he's enjoyed every minute.
Aaron Cruden's game has gone to another level under the former first five-eighth's guidance and the Chiefs' four-strong management team is considered the best in the country.
But Smith's contract with the franchise ends at the end of this season and the urge to travel around New Zealand in a motor home with his wife is growing.
Smith had been touted as a potential replacement for outgoing Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett, but has indicated he was more likely to take a year off than jump into another head coaching position. He is also keen to remain close to his parents in Putaruru.
"I'm not going to apply for the 'Canes job," Smith told the Fairfax Media yesterday. "I'm more likely to do the opposite and have a break. I'm only signed here until the end of this year. I'm not sure what's going to happen.
"At some point soon I'll probably be having a bit of a break for maybe a year and then re-assess where I go to from there.
"I've had a number of years in this game and at some point I'm pretty keen to take a bit of time off with my wife and travel around the country a wee bit. I don't know when that will be.
"I'll sit down with [head coach] Dave [Rennie] and the club and make some decisions later in the year."
Given his extensive intellectual property, Smith has agreed to remain in New Zealand until after next year's World Cup.
"I'm committed to stay in the country until the end of 2015 - there's no thoughts of going anywhere else we'll just see how it goes," he said.
"The commitment to New Zealand is as much a moral one as anything. They were pretty keen for me to stay in the country and I'm happy to. I've stayed largely because of my family and that loyalty to the All Blacks."
