....he just can't survive at tighthead against any credible pressure. Trouble is Marcel is a penalty machine, Malherbe was monstered by the Irish and Koch, excellent in general play has cracked in his few test exposures. Redlinghuis is much like Koch, but reasonably solid against the Irish. Adriaanse is fairly reliable, but not test class.
We have guys that fight to survive, but no settled reliable scrummager at tighthead.

It's astonishing...... the Beast, Dylan Smith, Kitshoff, Nyakane and others are all test level props. Why don't we produce tightheads?

We have better tightheads than we had over the last three years.   Jannie is one example that played well past his sell-by date.  But then he was the national treasure of the really ignorant.

Mallett for once gets it right:
What former Bok coach NICK MALLETT had to say on SuperSport about the past weekend's Super Rugby matches involving South African teams.

Sharks vs Cheetahs

‘Referee Stuart Berry saw a different picture to me. Coenie Oosthuizen was under tremendous pressure at the scrum, going sideways and backwards. His knees were on the ground, the Cheetahs were going forward and the only reason they didn't score is because the Sharks collapsed the scrum. There was no reason to go back for another [third] penalty for the Cheetahs, it should have been a penalty try. Berry said there was no possibility of a penalty try because the Cheetahs weren’t going forward, but you cannot go forward if the opposition front row is lying on the ground.

'The dominance of the Cheetahs scrum was such that Sharks scrumhalf Michael Claassens took forever to put the ball in and then Berry decided to penalise the Cheetahs for pushing early and from there the Sharks scored. Berry’s handling of the scrums, in my view, was not right. I’m really confused with Oosthuizen at tighthead. He was clearly scrumming inwards in front of the referee and yet the Sharks got away without a penalty being given against them and they got a penalty from which they scored.

‘Coenie is a very good player with ball in hand, a good tackler and he turns ball over, but he is not a good tighthead prop and we’ve seen that for the last three seasons. I don’t know why the Sharks didn’t start Lourens Adriaanse, they may have a rotation policy. But it’s far better to get a good scrummager for the first half and the next 10 minutes after the break and get Coenie on for the last 30 minutes when everyone is tired.

‘If the Sharks do get to the quarter-finals and play the Lions, which looks like being the case, then that scrumming problem is going to raise its head again, unless Adriaanse plays tighthead.’

Coenie should move to hooker. He does not have the strength to play tighthead. He was a good loosehead until his neck injury that prompted the move to tighthead. If he plays hooker he will not have tire him self out getting scrummed into the ground

Coenie has a dodgy neck and you want him to move to hooker? Sure?

At least he won't be a liability at tighthead.
If he wants to play this is the only open spot for him- otherwise going back to loosehead is the only position. It is true that hookers can't hurt their necks- but so can props.

I don't think that I would agree that hookers can't hurt their necks. I would rather think that they would be more in danger of neck injuries than props.

I told poor snapster years ago Coenie couldn't play tighthead. If he can't play loose head because of the neck injury he is stuffed!
Wonder where ou rooitwit is. Up to no good somewhere I guess.

 Coenie was demolished.
He moves like a well lubricated door hinge.
He's not a very good rugby player at all ... and should have thought of calling it a day years ago ... and yet he keeps being selected ... ????
Can never figure that one out.
Jannie was dead average all his life. I never rated him as anything special.
