Mozart and AO will disagree with you two.  According to them Erasmus is useless as a coach.   However, Erasmus as Director of Rugby  will have  his subordinate the Chief Coach under a ti ght reign.   

I actually said Rassie is an "okay coach". What we got today was the Ellis Park blueprint, minus the defensive collapse. This is not the man to take the Boks forward. Our rugby is dour and limited, falling behind the trends of the modern game. We are fortunate we only had to produce one big game. 

He proved nothing of the sort. Right up until the final our game was unanimously dubbed a tragedy, after 80 minutes, it was the best season ever, there were no problems and every player gets an 8 aside from Mostert, Louw, Thor and Frans. This is not the coach to take the Boks into the next cycle. Making emotional decisions is not the mark of a wise man Saffy. You are ever the emotional pedant.

He most likely will win coach of the year. The unlikelihood of our win makes him the front runner. Good on him. 

The Bok game throughout the RC was the same as always. Australia were hopeless at altitude, yet did expose our defence and dominate the aerial engagements. New Zealand were in a state of flux. We bashed Los Pumas, yet they bashed us in the return fixture. We were hopeless against New Zealand in our WC opener and strolled over minnows and an injury ravaged Welsh side until England. Does he deserve an award? Yes. Is he definitively a "great" coach? No. He has never proven that. He is an average coach. I always reasoned he was an ideas man in need of guidance, but he was nothing of the sort. The variations you speak of were slight, and were present in previous tests. Heavily scripted procedurally generated offence. 

This is not the way forward. Rassie is a stepping stone. If we do not move forward from him we will fail to achieve our potential. The next year is the perfect opportunity to assert dominance in the southern hemisphere. We must not falter. Again.

A "stepping stone" coach does not take over a floundering team ranked 8th in the world, two years out from a world cup, and win the world cup, the Rugby Champs, regain the 1st in the world tag and beat NZ twice! One of those victories on NZ soil! Really! Just look at what he has achieved a in 2 years! He literally could not have achieved more, especially not in 2019!

Incorrect Blue, you are very wrong. He lost to New Zealand, and then beat England. That was the challenge. Furthermore, you are getting a little ahead of yourself, we beat New Zealand once under Rassie, not twice. 

Has Rassie advanced our game? The simple answer is no. Heck, are we certain that it's Rassie who is the guru? It's all about defence and nothing else. Therefore Nienaber is the chief architect of the past two seasons. Is that not correct? 

No Blue. Rassie's conservative damage limitation plan was just enough to hold for a couple of games. That's it. To now expect him to oversee an entire cycle? That's simply too much. Rassie is not the man to take the team forward and I get the feeling he knows that. He is an average coach, who leans heavily on his defence guru Nienaber. If you can identify something contrary to this, we can review it. I have posted a significant amount information on Rassie's reign; I know very well what he is and isn't about. 

How so? Before the final, who was happy with our game? 

We are talking retention through another four years. He won the World Cup, credit to him. The abbreviated RC is not enough to sway the argument in his favour, not even close. 

Rassie has given all his has to the Boks. That's it. I'd much rather have a coach like Ackermann, someone with superior technical acumen to implement a more complete game. Do you honestly believe we can bully our way through 2020 and stay #1? Is that honestly your vision for the Boks? Surely you can see this is not even remotely enough. I said the same thing in 2009 about the Bok gameplan, nobody wanted to listen then. The Boks were simply too big to fail. Look what happened. Rasse has turned the Boks into the Stormers, the worst model in super rugby. Good enough for a couple of knockout games, not good enough for sustained success.  

If you were to say to me that Rassie implemented a more sensible approach that gave our players a better chance to succeed. I'd agree. If you said he steadied the ship after Coetzee's trigger happy all guns blazing gameplan backfired. I'd agree. I have yet to diminish the achievement of the World Cup, I'd never do that to any Bok side, not even Pieter, who is the only coach I dislike personally - though I do not regard the abbreviated RC as anything at all. 

If we are going to say that Rassie is the best Bok coach ever, I'll laugh. If we are going to say his model is the future of Bok rugby. I'll vehemently disagree. He was good enough for now. We move on. Hopefully making rugby decisions. Of course, the door is now open for a black coach with no credentials and a fully black team. 

Deon Davids dod very well with the Kings in their last year of Super Rugby, but failed to make an impression in the Pro 14...but it would be unfair to thow him into the head coach job now. I really don't see a real candidate ATM...but I'm sure Rassie have a plan.

Of the home grown talent, I only trust Ackermann. I don't think Ludeke would do a bad job though, certainly no worse than Rassie.

"Rassie Erasmus has revealed that he came close to resigning as Springbok coach last year.

After a 32-19 loss to Argentina in Mendoza and a 23-18 defeat by Australia in Brisbane, the Boks were under pressure heading into a Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

"We had a lot of small targets where we tried to simulate matches, as there was only 18 Test matches before the World Cup. We put a lot of emphasis on winning against the All Blacks in Wellington last year as we knew that would be a way to get the confidence of both the players and the public up," Erasmus said, as quoted by SuperSport.com

"I decided to treat the All Black game like it was a quarter-final and decided we should play that role. Then we lost to Australia and Argentina, and I decided that if we don't win I will resign as coach as I have never lost three games in a row as a coach at any level and thought that if I did not get it right then I did not deserve to be a Springbok coach."

Erasmus added that the win against New Zealand changed the whole mood in the Bok camp.

"It was very important for us not to lose there. Then we drew with them in the next game there a few months ago and that was also an important result for us in terms of building confidence and making people believe in us."

Erasmus said before the World Cup final that the match would be his last as national coach and he will now focus on his Director of Rugby role at SA Rugby.

"It is probably my last Test - it is my last Test match that I will be the head coach," he told media last Thursday after naming his side for the final.

Erasmus has proved that he is always 100% honest in dealing with the public and the above is typical.   

A number of posters - bar the normal dead heads - moaned about the future as to the Chief Coach and wanted Erasmus to remain as Chief Coach.   He will appoint the new Chief Coach and the latter will report to him.   He will obviously play a much more hands-on role than the case was in the past.   

That is one reason why I think Jones will be his successor as Chief Coach - we will have to wait and see what happens over the next three to four weeks. Jones at the moment has no future contract in place  and any decision as to his future will be sooner rather than later.     

Take Rassie at his word, he doesn't want to be the coach. There are probably personal reasons for this.....he enjoys the fix but not the long term maintenance. If he really wanted to do this, he would.....most coaches would....Eraser is cut of a different cloth.

His primary contribution to the Boks was in selection and morale. In terms of selection some will give him credit for keeping faith with Allende and putting Stephanie at flank.....I think he succeeded in spite of that. His really crucial selections were bringing Willie and Faf back, and selecting Vermeulen and the Beast when things got serious. 

But his biggest selection success was Kolbe and the guys he left out when the going got tough.....the likes of Willemse, Gelant, Kwagga, Elton, Reinach, the Deysel twins, and all those Lions' plodders like Combrink and Vorster.....players the fans were howling for, but he had the wisdom to avoid.

Morale was undoubtedly instantly improved when he arrived, with the credibility of a Springbok and a personality the players had faith in.....he also had more inherent authority because he was a reluctant warrior

Strategically the defensive gains can be kept by keeping Nienaber. And there wasn't much else if anything that was new strategically. There were some nice tactics yesterday though....like that second phase maul.

We make much of turning around the ship from a worst of 7 or 8. We should never be lower than 3 with our huge pool of big men. All we had to do to get there was to forget the stupid idea that rugby could only be played like NZ.....it never worked for us. The moment we stopped we were back.

Given the horrible alternatives that we could easily conjure up I would be all for keeping Eraser.....but only if he is committed. We don't need 4 years of maybe he'll stay for one more year.....maybe he won't ....especially with the Lions coming up.

Mozart cannot make a contribution on site without attacking Du Toit and De Allende,   That is showing crude stupidity and lack of knowledge of rugby.

He includes Willemse and  3 of the other players in his squad for the WC and used them wisely as back-up players in games against the minnows and saved the top players for the major games - something Meyer could not do because the squad of 2015 had worse unplayable duds in 2015 than any selections of Meyer in 2019. 

Then he forgets that Erasmus was Director of Rugby for many years - the Stormers - the Springboks - Munster - and now the Springboks.   That is the post he - with his huge rugby intellect and knowledge is best used in and since the public knows very little about the actual role of the Director of Rugby worldwide.  Normally the role meets a double field of operation, namely -

*   the development of rugby - in Erasmus's case in SA - through identification of potential players and looking after their development; and

*   Management of coaching - including the Chief Coach and his staff, as well as coaching on franchise level.

There is no way that Mozart's assumptions in this case is correct and it is just another sideswipe at Erasmus.     .
