Western Province, Stormers to be sold

Date published: December 21 2016

Western Province Rugby (Pty) Limited’s liquidation means that both the Stormers and WP are now for sale.

That was the word from Chris van Zyl, one of two liquidators who was appointed by the Cape High Court to sell WP Rugby.

Van Zyl confirmed on Wednesday that WP have the power to borrow money and are trying their best to collect money to pay their players, coaches and employees’ salaries during December.

“It will also protect their contracts,” he told Netwerk24.

The court has told Van Zyl and his fellow liquidator, Dallie van der Merwe, to sell WP Rugby’s assetts and not to go ahead with any new contracts which has been approved by the management.

The Western Province Rugby Union had a 75% interest in WP Rugby, while Remgro Sport Investments (RSI) had a 25%-interest.

Van Zyl admitted that those shares are worth nothing now, however.

Van Zyl confirmed that, in future, they will do everything in their power to protect sponsors.

“We are busy finding a suitable buyer to protect WP Rugby’s business,” he added.

“Only then will the new owners be able to commence with new contracts with sponsors and shareholders.”

According to Van Zyl, all current contracts will be protected and a Stormers team will be named on condition that a “suitable buyer is found”.

 likwidateurs?
what is this? kiwi liquidators? (can someone translate that last sentence?)

now seriously,... seems that things are going from bad to worse for the SA rugby,... no positive news for the SA rugby in a very long time and seems that it's sinking irremediably,... which is bad for rugby

The free translation is as follows:-

“Ons onderneming as likwidateurs is om die besigheid as ’n lopende saak te hanteer.”

Our undertaking as liquidators is to handle the business as a running concern"

Hope that helps.

Sadly it does seem as if WP Rugby has taken a lead from the way the government and its parastatals are run. Sad day when politics and self enrichment replaces the love, passion and respect for a sport.
The question always lingers: "Was professionalism good for rugby, or not?" - You be the judge!

"Our undertaking as liquidators is to handle the business as a running concern"
Just that very sentence makes me cringe already.. "business as a running concern"

These liquidators are far from "rugby people" they are business people who are driven solely by profit.  How the hell can that and their attitude be good for the game we all love?

Sorry - but all codes of professional sport worldwide is a business and anything else is not applicable in this era.
In any event they are not running the game - the private sector buyers will surely make their demands.   I think in general that in the case of western province the money will come from Remgro - so the liquidators will be off the scene in a short time.

Going into debt to keep practising professional rugby. Excellent men...

Weird stuff to read that this episode marks a turn to morph into somekind of parasitism.

Rugby has been parasiting South Africa since its introduction in that country.

Rugby should never have been introduced there. It was done by a minority who have been acting as a parasite over a majority.
This only goes for some time and it seems the end is near.

Time to end professional rugby in SA through will or be forced to do it later.

Rugby brings nothing to SA. There is no internal cause to keep going on with it.

At the moment, it is maintained to support foreign interests, foreigners who fear of losing their SA vs their team game.

People in SA are sacrifying so that foreigners have their fun.

If the right investors / owner takes over it could be a great thing. Clear the glut of administration and bring an infusion of cash and business efficiency to move things forward.
Professionalism isn't going away. The problem has been amateur organizations trying to survive in an age of professionalism and the top heavy administration that is in place. In SA, with the economic malaise, weak rand its honestly surprising its survived as long as it has.
Many a professional franchise in other sports has been turned around by a new owner and the new structure they bring. The WP / Stormers brand is still strong in SA and has a player pipeline second to none - it should be an attractive option.
South African rugby needs some things to blow up. Only way beneficial change will come.

'Lopende' says it all. Even the damn Liquidators are favoring running rugby vs a more balanced game....no wonder the Stormers are going bust. O.K.

What about football? Already answered the question.

The big difference is that SA can keep practising football with the african neighbours.
It changes a big deal.

SA has no african rugby partners and is stuck with partners with very high consumption rate.

The super something is engulfed in a globalist scheme, looking for partners in Japan, Argentina. The transportation only is costy, let alone the life style associated.

Five star hotels, jacuzzi, air conditioning, cable tv, servants, drugs, $5000 prostitutes etc
That is quite the leak of SA wealth so that these guys can live the poshy life. In the meantime, kids are dying from starvation in SA.

African football players: give them a bedroll, a piece of chicken meat, that will do. Some of them are not even paid when they play for their country. They take on their personal wealth.

Rugby is bleeding SA to permanent misery.

I think that the Stromers/WP is taken over by Remgro or at least a special company established to handle the Stormers.   The background owner will be Johann Rupert and he can just allocate some of his small change to turn WP around.
Whether that is going to be a good thing is another question - Rupert is not an easy baby to deal with.   The famous story about Rupert remains - he is hard as nails.   When an English publication said Afrikaans is the ugliest language in the world, Rupert cancelled the advertising account of Richemont with them in 2005 nd that ban still holds.
However - he has so much money it could save WP in the long run if he decides to invest and it seems he is.   The other franchises will find it hard to survive without a major owner.   The other options would be Naspers - the owner of Supersport.   They also have ample funds from their business in China, Russia, Scandinavia and Africa - their gross business profit is circa $24 billion a year.   They may yet buy a team - my money is on either the Lions or the Bulls.   The Lions major sponsor is Emirates Air = so they may convert the sponsorship into buying the team.
The poor franchises (the Sharks and the Cheetahs) may find it hard to get a buyer interested.    The Cheetahs must regret it that Dr Louis Luyt is not around anymore to save their bacon.   However, Luyt was never in the same league as Rupert and Jooste of Naspers, but he could have convinced others to invest.

Nah, Remgro pulled out. Has to be like a peg through Mike's heart, since he made such big efforts to convince us how big this was going to be for WP. He even reckoned that Remgro should give more money to WP since two old aunties who were some distant relatives of Frans Malherbe, were involved in investing in Remgro many many moons ago. Hahaha.

 @Draad. Correct.
Remgro pull-out: WP’s Wakefield speaks

Cape Town – Western Province Rugby Union supremoThelo Wakefield says it is “definitely business as usual” at Newlands, following the revelation that powerful investment company backers Remgro are withdrawing from Newlands.

Speaking to Sport24 on Saturday, the president said there was “no reason for panic” over the situation.

He said they expected to make a “very positive announcement in the near future … let’s leave it at that”.

This follows Netwerk24 reporting on Friday that Remgro, in a move confirmed by their CEO Jannie Durand, will not be converting loans to embattled WP into stake-holding.

It will also mean that loans amounting to more than R40-million last year, which served as a rescue remedy at the time, have to be repaid.

With the unexpected development, the WPRUsimultaneously loses the business expertise of Remgro, which previously had a 24.9 percent stake in the WP Rugby business wing, controversially liquidated in 2016.

During the crisis period immediately leading up to it, Remgro pumped money in to ensure that salaries of staff and players could still be paid.

Durand was quoted by Netwerk24’s Stephen Nell as saying: “We must now sit down with WP and chat about how the money will be repaid. Naturally we will be reasonable and not dump (them) overnight into a new crisis.

“Western Province will now have to seek a new business partner, or the union will have to run their affairs themselves.”

Durand said that certain areas of disagreement with WP had not been the reason for their withdrawal, and that the core problem was the South African Rugby Union’s franchise model and the stipulations associated with shareholding.

Several months ago, Saru adjusted its constitution to allow for outside parties to up their shareholdings to a maximum of 74 percent in provincial unions.

According to Durand, Saru had the power to withdraw the Super Rugby participation status of a franchise at any juncture, with 12 months’ notice.

“We cannot expose our shareholders to that sort of risk,” he said.

Also according to the future model, all intellectual capital within a union’s business wing belongs to Saru.

Wakefield ebulliently announced in late December last year that the future of WP Rugby had been “saved” after a new entity owned by the union – backed by Remgro – effectively bought the liquidated company.

Remgro Sport Investments were earmarked for a 49 percent share in it.

“Western Province Rugby is safe and sound,” Wakefield had said at the time. “We look forward to working with Remgro to build the company on a sound basis and sound foundation.”

Sport24 has sought comment from Saru’s general manager (corporate affairs), Andy Colquhoun, but had not yet received a reply at the time of writing.

Thanks! So it seems the one-sided axing of the Cheetahs and the Kings had repercussions for WP too. SARU seems to be working against the interest of business-run rugby in this country... it might work against their transformation goals in the short run, but it's surely gonna cost the whole of rugby in the long run.
How old is this article?
Don't bother, I see it's from Saturday.

The whole trouble is that we have in incompetent quota types like Wakefield etc running things. It would never have come to this Brycy and JW had I been running the show as you should realize!! Look at the crowds the Stormers get etc.  The Lions built up from zero clowns like Wakefield can only run  down th ings.Maybe a great thing If Rupert takes over he wont tolerate fools easily.

Ai, just don't know what to make with all of these clowns running the show. I have been going on for years about these blazer buddies that has their hands in the kitty box.
Now, they are pulling the same stunt as last year to be liquidated and bought back by some other tentacle that they have just to off load the dept.
Considering the crowds that the Stormers pulls in, there should be no reason why they can not be in strong financial position.
Who is the guy in charge of signing all of these dodgy sponsorship and management deals that only finds out once the bill arrive of what they have signed up to.
Time for Saru to shut all of the provinces down and go full franchise similar to the IPL. Get the best players in, pay them well and make it a game worth watching.

Remgrow is a top running business and would not pup up with the BS of Wakefield and co.   I think that the matter is critical - no other business partner will be found and I think that SARU would go back to Remgro in the end to save the WP Rugby Union.
No reputable company will enter into partnership with the gravy train buggers and I think that the matter is far from being resolved.

Ja Mike, agree, Remgro CEO was interviewed earlier this year to stat that they want to build a winning culture, probably better off going to the Lions, but then again. How can you build a winning team when you have a lot of quota dead weight in the team or midget outside backs that gets skinned.
I'm also wondering if they prefer looking at what happens to the Cheetahs and Kings to see what their global attraction would look like.
The best business are the ones that are happy to wait rather than rush in. Case in point is the whole Health & Racquet and Virgin buy out. They thought they'd cashed in but good old Branson was happy to wait. By the way, the owners of H&R were complete bastards.
Remgro might be doing the same. Let them sink, get their debts back and then buy the stormers on the cheep.
Considering WP rugby holds no value now that SARU decided to devalue the currie cup to a side show that nobody wants to watch.
