Read here.

Finally, someone agrees with me that Eben Etzebeth will never fulfill his obvious potential as long as he's trying to be this macho "breker".

The worst thing anyone ever did was to compare Etzebeth's role to the "enforcer" role that Bakkies Botha used to play because ever since then Etzebeth has been focussing more on being the hard case in the team rather than concentrating on his game.

Yeah ... he's been rather poor this season.

Pieter Steff Du Toit is his better by some way and so is Mostert.

Get on with the game, Eben. Pulling your face like that scares no one. It just makes an arse out of you.

You two dopes clearly don't know that Etzebeth was rated the standout player in the game against the old crusts.Wake up dopes!!!! I think a real forward like Etzebeth intimidates these two girlie boys even when they don't have to face Etzebeth on the field. Hahahhahahahahahahaha
Harden up girls you are an embarrassment!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahaha!

Baboon-ou does get quite tearful and worked up when anyone criticizes Abby Elizabeth or any of the other weak-arsed little Stompie pansies.

Go Highlanders!

At the start of last season I complained the Eben was more of a poser and not I influencing games enough.
Then, by the end of the Springbok season I found that he was probably one of the only Boks who seemed to improve. To a degree I was forced to eat my words.
He certainly has things to work on but he remains a a solid prospect for the Stormers and the Boks.
I just wish he'd get the he'll out of the gym for a few months. A lock does not need to be a body builder. It's slowing him down and that has an effect on both his attacking and defensive ability.

He's a talent. Just needs to focus on the game and leave the silly stuff alone.

Oh I think he's okay...took all his lineouts and one of the Saders' lineouts on Saturday. Made all his tackles....Stephanie missed 3....conceded no penalties, Stephanie conceded 1. .. Tournament to date both Etzebeth and Stephanie have conceded 8 penalties, but Etzebeth has played one more game. And I can't recall when last Etzebeth was carded. Seems his 'attitude' is very well controlled. . This is a journalistic 'angle' .....an attempt to find something to say to make a mark. Unfortunately he the writer never checked his facts.

So pulling faces does exactly what in a match?

How much did it help when the Lions ran in 4 trys to 1?

Maybe the hiding they received at the hands of the Lions was the cause of those funny faces.

Well it certainly seemed to help against the Chiefs, after the dust up Rettallik was a shadow of his normal self.....and it doesn't seem to hurt in terms of penalties and cards. If this is what it takes to get the juices flowing what's the fuss?

I respect Etzebeth - but in reality Du Toit is a better performer - a harder worker and a much more athletic player.   Etzebeth is Ok when it comes to most stuff - but he has a tendency to vanish in games.
To constantly criticize Du Toit is just not on.   Even when playing at loosie he organized the line-outs on Saturday he made double the tackle attempts Etzebeth made.  Granted he missed three tackles - but some misses would happen in open field play where Etzebeth would not be in contention at all.

Ou Maaik, you should probably also mention the fact that Pieter-Steph can actually perform the basic function of passing the rugby ball . . . unlike Eben's efforts that bounce twice before they get to the receiver.

Mozart hated Du Toit ever since he became a threat to Matfield retention in the Springbok team and the same applies to De Jager.   They can play top games and Mozart will run them down.   I would never criticize players who play rugby - it is only when they make a farce of the game when it gets me irritated.

Cloudy, there was nothing in the Saders match. Eben actually actually calmed Notche down when he got involved in a shouting and shoving scene with the Sader hooker. They are talking about a handbag fight in the Lions match.

Not just the LIons game. In any given match featuring the Hapless Stompies, as soon as there's the slightest bit of pushing and shoving Etzebeth will run from wherever he is on the pitch (usually the only time he breaks into anything more than a jog) and try to get involved . . . and invariably he'll have a stupid smile plastered over his face which I think is an attempt to convey what a hard case he is as in "I are so tough I even smile for you when you want to moer me".

All nations used to do this intimidation thing, the crazy smile and all that but I don't see too many kiwi players doing this in super rugby & AB level. To me it's smart to play the ref & getting a smiling ugly mug make it look like you are furthering the off the ball tussles & not concentrating on the game. Not a good method of getting the ref in your pocket

This from Sky Sports .... 'Etzebeth stands tall at 6ft 8ins and weighs over 19 stone, making him the heaviest player on the South African team. The circumference of his bicep is 19 inches, to put that into context, a rugby ball is 24 inches in circumference. . When it comes to gym time and training, Etzebeth can bench over 175kg and he’s also had special dumbbells made for him that weigh 75kg as the standard one’s just aren’t heavy enough for him. He can also run 40m in 5.11 seconds, reaching a top speed of 17.4 miles per hour. To put that into context once again, Usain Bolt can run 40m in 4.64 seconds. . What a freak.' ... No way Stephanie is more athletic than Etzebeth.....as they said in Soldier......Eben is 'stronger, bigger, faster.' And he can tackle.

But he is also injured a lot (as is PSDT) & he does not always translate those physical attributed into performance on the field. Retallick and Whitelock are far more consistent.

Perhaps ...I rate both the NZ locks who are heady players. Etzebeth isn't playing for the Saders or ABs though....if he was playing for NZ he would be a legend. And as a pure athlete measured in terms of strength and speed I doubt Etzebeth's superior exists among current locks.

For sure he would do better in NZ as his work load would be better managed & the coaching would be better. Plus he would be surrounded by better players overall. That would be a sight to behold.
His visa is in the mail but a wee chap called Beeno has blocked the pipeline with his incessant applications for kiwi citizenship

Ezebeth is underutilized. They need to create space for him to run into - instead of always getting tackled by 2 opposition players.
