What is new? Jones supports White for Wallabies job

Old friends stick together it seems if the following article from the Canberra Times is borne in mind:-

"Former World Cup-winning coach Eddie Jones has thrown his weight behind Jake White to replace Ewen McKenzie after the former Springbok coach emerged as a shock contender for the Wallabies job.

Jones has called on the ARU to make changes if the "rabble continues" in the Bledisloe Cup clash against New Zealand on Saturday, backing White as the man capable of turning the Wallabies' fortunes around.

"If they [the Wallabies] play well on the weekend then he [McKenzie] should go through to the World Cup.

"But if the rabble continues, they've really got to look at getting someone in for a short period of time until the World Cup, and one of the blokes who could definitely do it, would be Jake.

"It's not a long-term approach, but it could work, and then groom [Michael] Cheika to take over after that," Jones said.

There are only a handful of Tests remaining before the World Cup in England and Jones is adamant White could be successful if the ARU opt for a different path.

White is available to coach international rugby again after quitting his post at the Sharks last month.

McKenzie has been battling through off-field dramas for two weeks and there is growing discontent among players less than a year before the World Cup.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver publicly backed McKenzie on Monday, denying they had sounded out potential replacement candidates and insisting McKenzie would coach the team to the World Cup.

But it is understood White's management has made contact with the ARU and there are claims ARU chairman Michael Hawker sounded out the International Rugby Board Hall of Fame coach. The claims have been denied.

Former ACT Brumbies mentor White has a strong history of being able to turn teams around in short periods, leading the Brumbies to the 2013 Super Rugby final before he quit with two years left on his contract.

White was interviewed for the Wallabies job in Melbourne last year when the ARU was preparing to axe Robbie Deans but the ARU overlooked him.

He has always detailed his desire to return to international coaching after leading the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2007.

"And who says I can't coach Australia after the World Cup? I've not turned my back on Australia," White said after quitting the Brumbies.

The ARU opted for McKenzie, with Pulver admitting part of the decision was because of McKenzie's plan to play "the Australian way", a reference to attacking rugby.

Since then McKenzie has won just 11 of 21 Tests – a success rate of 52 per cent.

"The speculation about my job probably is not front of mind for me; there are a lot of other issues going on at the moment.

"In the end, it's a results-driven business and I don't shy away from that, but at the same token, it's a values-based business as well, so you have to do the right things on and off the field," McKenzie.

There is speculation that Super Rugby championship-winning mentor Michael Cheika turned down an approach from the ARU and White has rocketed into the frame.

"If someone taps you on the shoulder and says, 'it's time', well that's what happens.

"It happens to all coaches at some point in time. If someone determines you're not doing the job how they want it, they'll tap you on the shoulder and tell you," he added.

White made an immediate impact at the Brumbies when he arrived at the end of 2011, lifting them from the lowest point in their history to the grand final in the space of two years.

White's case is also helped by the fact there are 10 Brumbies in the Wallabies squad with Stephen Moore and David Pocock to make their comebacks from injury next year.

White has joined Tonga in a consultant role after the IRB asked him to boost its World Cup preparations."

I think there is something going on here - a bad hear end tour for the Wallabies adn McKenzie will be tickets - with compliments from Kentcuky fried Chiken and MacDonalds.   

 Oz could do a lot worse than White and Jones. The test versus the wee abs is becoming more emotional by the day. Will the wobbliers fight for their coach or see this as a way to get rid of him?
Personally I think Ewen deserves more time. The bad boys like Beale have really not helped.

The White bashers like joke rooitwit and snapster must be so puzzled that anybody is interested in Jake.Note it was the IRB who asked Jake to help Tonga - "White has joined Tonga in a consultant role after the IRB asked him to boost its World Cup preparations."

This is a short term turnaround assignment as described by Jones. There is no coach who gets results faster than Jake. This would be Australia's best choice.

There re quite a numbe rof nutcases here - members who live in cloud cuckoo land - and wardad is not the wort one here.
However, back to Jake White.  He is a good one-dimentional coach - needs help in especially backline play of which he has limited understanding.   I think that that caused serious problems with the Sharks set-up.   He also refused to work with Meyer to enhance comprehensive rugby and was in that case in cahoots with the Bulls - the kick-and-chase game was to apply by hook and by crook.   
Be it as it may - here was a sense of relief in Sharks circles because of his departure.  You are one person who is always on to CoetZee - yet Coetzee in 2010 and up to the CC this year was following White's coachin methods to a "T".   In 2012 the Stormers had  the exact same game plan as the Sharks had this year.   Kick-and-chase - forget about backline attacking play - the basic function of backline players outside 10 is merely to defend.   They got to the Smi-final in 2012 and lost to the Crusaders - exactly the same happened to the Sharks.
Both teams played according to the same game plan - and in both cases the deficiencies of that plan came to the fore.   I think even White realized his deficiencies in coaching of backline players and drew Jones in to help him in that regard.  
In the case of the Brumbies he had Larkham as assistant caoch and that meant that he was not as free as he was with the Sharks - where the CEO was a close friend.   He had another close friend in Francois Steyn - so he ruled and ruined the sSharks backline to perfection. 
So where are we with White?   The Sharks think they are better off without him - though they would not say that in public.   There playing stye changed inteh CC and will continue to change.   I wonder when they will appoint a new Directorof rugby.?  Should be interesting.     
       

Where you were with White was the S15 semis. Lets see if the new liberated Sharks do any better next year.

Balls - Plumtree took the Sharks to the 2012 final - one step higher than White did.   White tried to play the game Coetzee had the Stormers play in 2012 and like is to be expected got lost in the semi-finals.   The game plan just did not work - it has too many limitations.
Incidentally Plumtree was struck by a cloud of injuries in 2013 like it was unbelievable.  However, to his credit he realized that there was a problem with his backlie and identified it early - the problem being Francois Steyn - and he replaced him fairly early.   White never recognized the problem and in the end his type of kick-and-chase game would always and  inevtiably fail.
When Meyer asked him for co-operation with regard to a more comprehensive game plan to be used by the franchises so as to get players more experienced in such games -  White ignored him - he never responded to the request.
White has his good points - but also serious limitations - so that is it.   
You ask about the Sharks next year - one thing is for sure - Steyn would not be in that backline at either center or flyhalf - so there is every chance that the Sharks backline would function.   Pity about the Jordaan injury though - he is one of the key players in that regard.
