South Africa’s World Cup-winning winger, Makazole Mapimpi, has found himself in hot water after admitting to making contact with the eye area of an opponent during a United Rugby Championship (URC) match. The incident, which occurred during the Sharks’ 42-22 victory over Cardiff at Cardiff Arms Park on January 25, has resulted in a three-game ban for the seasoned player.

The altercation took place during a scuffle with Cardiff hooker Efan Daniel. While Mapimpi escaped punishment during the game, he was later cited and faced a disciplinary hearing. At the hearing, Mapimpi acknowledged committing an offense worthy of a red card, leading to his suspension.

This isn’t the first time Mapimpi has been involved in an incident of this nature. In January 2023, he was banned for two weeks after being found guilty of making contact with the eye area of Bordeaux-Bègles scrum-half Maxime Lucu during a European Champions Cup match. Disciplinary officials took this prior incident into account when determining the length of his current ban.

As a result of the suspension, Mapimpi will miss three crucial URC matches for the Sharks. He’ll sit out their upcoming clash against the Bulls on February 15, followed by back-to-back games against the Lions. For a player of Mapimpi’s caliber, missing these matches is undoubtedly a blow, both for him and his team.

Mapimpi, a key figure in South Africa’s back-to-back Rugby World Cup triumphs, has built a reputation as a dynamic and impactful player. However, this latest incident serves as a reminder of the fine line players walk when it comes to discipline on the field.

For Sharks fans, the hope will be that Mapimpi uses this time to reflect and return to the pitch with the same focus and determination that has made him one of the sport’s most respected wingers. In the meantime, the team will need to find a way to fill the void left by his absence as they navigate this challenging stretch of the season.

What are your thoughts on the incident and the disciplinary process?

He is a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to confrontation

Seems to like to chirp and push players around

He turns 35 this year so he won’t be around for much longer

Great player but a bit of a nutcase

Well it’s out of character for Mapimpi to be involved in altercations with other players?

I can’t recall him being involved a lot in of the Ball incidents….

ATM he is still scoring tries like always, so we might still see him playing after he has turned 35….

Rassie likes the older more experienced ones :)

Most over rated wing ever, to think Rassie Chose this guy over Duhan Van Der Merwe. Duhan was too blond and Boer to fit in with the ANC narrative. He is good finisher and that is about it. Okay at chasing high balls and absolutely useless at tackling. Gets really rattled when somebody like Korebeti moered him into touch and has a long memory of how hurt he got that he lashes out.

Anyway, it was a great story for SA. Rassie conducted a plan that makes up for these players deficiency and to still produce winning rugby, even though it was ugly as hell.

7/1 forwards bench says it all

Agree David.

People pass judgement a little quicker because he is darker than average.

In truth, he probably isnt as good a defender as Pietersen.

He probably isn't as quick as Habana.

He isnt as nimble as Kolbe.

But he has an incredible record for the Boks and is one of our leading try scorers.

He hardly misses a tackle and he has a wonderful work ethic.

His game has evolved a lot, and it continues to evolve. Apparently he's a top class eye gouger now as well!
