28 years ago today the opening game of World Cup 95.

I watched the game on the big screen at a huge sports complex north of Kempton Park.

I remember the JSE was deserted that day, nobody was gonna miss the game.

Hendricks ran round Campese and Stransky scored the rest.

I saw it at home, no big screen. It was the first time I really connected with rugby. Not because of the politics etc, I was too young, and quite disconnected from it. Rather, the game just came alive to me. It was a special time. I still like to rewatch old games from the 1993 to 1998 period.

My brother and I and a mate shared a flat in Parow back in the day...we and a few others buddies watched the match there and then went to to a pub at the bottom of Sir Lowry's pas to celebrate afterwards...quite a drive, but the designated driver had to meet a girl there...Firlands...there was a guy dressed the same as the ref on the day...boots and all...watched the final with my dad in his house in Stilbaai...

More to the point, where did Suzie watch the game?

In the Daisy de Melker suite.

We (my whole family) watched at friends and had a braai.

I was about 2kms away from Ellis Park. Watched it at home with my family. Don't have as many memories of it as I do of the opening game though. Was still pretty young but that was my introduction to Mr Gerber. Weird how one remembers stuff. My sister made mince and cheese jaffles(who remembers those?).

I watched the RWC Final at a mate’s place in Auckland with mega beers on board. My abiding memory from that debacle (from an AB perspective) is Andrew Mehrtens and his inability to kick a drop goal when it really mattered. I blame him as he was born in SA after all…..

Stransky kicked 2 drops that day and Mehrtens one, couple of close shaved though I remember.

His folks spent 4 years in SA (Mehrtens) and his granddad, dad both played for Canterbury.

Stransky just turned up that day. He missed every single drop kick in training for the final.
