Durban - Sharks director of rugby Jake White praised his side for overcoming several personnel changes, as well as the Queensland Reds, in Saturday's Super Rugby clash at King's Park in Durban.

The Sharks endured a spell of Reds' pressure in the second half, to eventually prevail 35-20, and White said he was delighted, considering the circumstances.

"This was not a normal week. With the emotional backlog in that group, to come back and beat the Reds, who have a squad full of Wallabies, and have won this competition, I am very happy," White said.

White admitted that his side had again "stopped playing" during the second half, which led to a Reds' revival.

"We started getting ahead of ourselves, when we had played solid rugby in the first half. When you give them loose balls like that, you make life difficult," White said.

The Sharks had lost promising youngsters Paul Jordaan and Pieter-Steph du Toit ahead of the match, and White admitted that those were big setbacks for the squad.

"I feel for them. Pieter-Steph du Toit is now one of the best players in the world," White said.

"But every team has to face up to these challenges, and John Smit has always told me that this group of players can adapt to change."

The Reds, who at one stage had pulled to within eight points of the Sharks, rued some of the calls made by referee Lourens van der Merwe.

Second half substitute Beau Robinson was carded for infringing at the breakdown in the 67th minute, which coach Richard Graham said was a crucial point in the game.

"At that point, we still had an opportunity. We finished strongly, so it would probably have come down to how we managed the last 13 minutes," Graham said.

"I don't think the breakdown was refereed very well, so I'm frustrated in that sense," he added.

Reds captain James Horwill spent several instances speaking to Van der Merwe.

"There were certain things that we didn't get the rub of the green, but that's rugby sometimes," Horwill said.

Both Graham and Horwill lamented the number of clear chances that the Reds let slip, in particular Mike Harris dropping the ball on the tryline, shortly before half-time.

"There were plenty of opportunities either side of half-time to get closer, and we just didn't take them," Horwill said.

"Those guys know themselves they missed opportunities, so I don't need to say anything to them," Graham added, looking ahead to their next clash against the Lions.

"Our character, when we were down 25-6, was displayed when we came back to 28-20. But our accuracy has got to be better.

"Their spirit has really impressed me, and they continue to fight. We know that we will face something similar to what Frans Steyn did, punishing us from anywhere inside 55 metres."

White believes the Sharks will have a massive challenge at Loftus Versfeld, when they face the Bulls next week, but backed his players.

"It's massive. But it can be done. This group of players has a good record there, and we have some momentum now."

Sharks were fortunate to win this game. They need to play 80 minutes. Thry dont havre agreat lock combo.

The loss of Du Toit can't be overestimated and doubts must now arise as to their winning the comp. I have a feeling the bulle could beat the Sharks next Saturday. We shall see.

Lions must thump the Reds.

I wrote extensvely about three problems faced by the Sharks and those are -
*  That without Jordaan their center pairing is totally toothless - with Steyn buggering up more and more in each successive game - he was a disaster area against the Reds;
*   Without Du Toit their lock combination is drastically weakened - White is right about that one;
*   There loosie combination is unbalanced with Alberts only playing for about 20 to 30 minutes and then fading out completely - yesterday he doubled up on the number of tackles made, but that does not mean he ever performs all the functions of a loosie.
I do not think - and at least hope - that they do not lose against the Bulls - but something will have to be done to get the problems mentioned at least solved.
Insofar as Francois Steyn is concerned Plumtree saw what was wrong and that things were not improving so he changed the center pairing.   Plumtree's problem was difficult after early public rumblings about under-performance in the second and third matches last year which reached fever pitch only after the huge loss to the Brumbies.
White is in a similar situation - but so far the criticism has only been muted - because of the fairly wide margins of the Sharks victories.   If the Sharks loses - the reasons would become clearer and White will be asked serious questions - similar questions o what Plumtree faced last year.   I w onder how long he is going to put up with it?

@mikey,

"That without Jordaan their center pairing is totally toothless - with Steyn buggering up more and more in each successive game - he was a disaster area against the Reds;"
shithole was pretty solid at 13 with the absence of jordaan, but sharks will be better of once jordaan retruns.

it wasnt steyns worst game, but IMO hes had a great season. and yes i am glad that looks cant kill, cos im to pretty to die form ur death stares.

"Without Du Toit their lock combination is drastically weakened - White is right about that one;"
du toit hasnt done anything to live up to the lady elizabeth like hype. good player with a ton of potential, but unlike lady elizabeth, hasnt stamped his mark in a clear and authoritative manner the way lady elizabeth did when hulked onto the scene.

"There loosie combination is unbalanced with Alberts only playing for about 20 to 30 minutes and then fading out completely - yesterday he doubled up on the number of tackles made, but that does not mean he ever performs all the functions of a loosie."
alberts made made 9 tackles which was equal to lambie as the most from an individual, but unlike lambie who missed two tackles, alberts missed none.
he gave away no penalties, made 21 meters which was 2nd most from any forward, three tackle breaks, an offload and only one turnover.

while he did go missing for parts of the game, he wasnt the only one as anyone who watched the 2nd half wpuld say. but alberts all round game was a pass.

if the loosie combination is unbalanced as u say, i dont think its alberts fault who has had a good season.

please mikey, i dont deserve ur death stares,

"Insofar as Francois Steyn is concerned Plumtree saw what was wrong and that things were not improving so he changed the center pairing -  White is in a similar situation and I wonder how long he is going to put up with it?"
sharks are 4 from 4 and ontop of the table, something tells me white is going to stick with steyn for a long while yet.

 saSUe kiwis dont know much about forward play and locks in particular. Du Toit was looking very good and his injury is a huge blow to the sharks. Etzebth and Du Toit were set to be the besty lock combo in the world by some distance. Locks the wee abs could only dream of having.
Steyn is lazy and needs to up his game a lot. His long range goal kicks and the occasional good pass are keeping him in the side. He has been disappointing thus far. Where is the athlete of the early years. His weight is down but still he is showing ZIP.

I agree that Steyn has yet to show the total package. His performances remind us of what he can do but still not where he needs to be (except kicking). I think he will keep improving as the season progresses & his kicking alone will win some games.

 Well one hopes with the game time he gets his fitmess levels will rise and so will his impact.  So far he seems slow. Too slow for a center. This is what is worrying me. W ould like him to show he still has the speed he once had - man they played him on the wing at one point.

I am serious when I say Steyn's game has gone backwards since the start of the season.   Take for instance the case yesterday against the Reds.  The Sharks did not have it all their way = and for long periods Lambie and Reinach had to kick balls to try and reduce the pressure.
In the whole game Lambie passed the ball to Steyn only six times.   Steyn in turn made 3 passes - and he held the ball 3 times.  When tackled he hung onto the ball twice and was penalized - and the third ball he spilled when he was tackled.   3 Balls - 3 bugger-ups.  One of the penalties were converted and he spilled ball let to the try scored by Genia.   The other penalty could also have been converted - it was straight in front of the polls about 30 meters out - but the Reds decided to make a corner kick and score a try.
Steyn was so bad yesterday that despite two penalty conversions he got -8 points on Foxsport.
He started of reasonably well against the Bulls and in each subsequent game became worse.

i would be surprised if steyn was not as fast if not faster then some of the other top 12s roaming arouind in world rugby like nonu, and roberts. even SBW wasnt a known speedster, but their 12 credentials would only be questioned by fools.

besides, if the Boks are happy with overrated useless JDV, they should be stoked when frans steyn comes a knocking with his incumbent Bok 12 application.

@brother beeno,
im not syaing that stephanie is a dud storminged, im just saying that despite getting the same hype as lady elizabeth, he hasnt achieved lady elizabeth like feats. the potential is there, but hasnt been met.

and please look at the Boks losses last year to the All Blacks, our locks made their Bok counterparts their bunny rabbits, why do u think dom meyer is bringing back the blood brothers, LMAO,

 He should be praising van der merve the ref too.... severely one-sided reffing gifted the sharks this one.

I don't think they are as good a team as everyone making out... the true test will be how they go on their tour away...

Havent seen their draw but hope they play Tahs in Sydney and great to see them play brumbies in Canberra given jack whites lack of loyalty..... lol...

They're a good team and still I'll tip them to be in Final v Tahs or chiefs... probly in SA...

The Waratahs plays the Sharks in Durban on 29 March 2014.
I think the Waratahs have a problem up front with their tight 5 - which account for their loss against the Brumbies.  That being the case they may struggle against SA teams.

 The Sharks minus Du Toit will not be quite the same Reds but should account for the hapless warts.

I have to agree with Beeno here.   The top locks in New Zealand are Whitelock, Retallick and Romano.  That being the case - those three were easily dealt with by second level locks from SA (one an inexperienced reshuffled loosie - Rhodes) in line-out play and other tight phase play in the two recent matches played against the Stormers.
The Stormers should have beaten the Crusaders and their loss against the Chiefs was the result of missed tackles (29) coupled to poor ball handling (21 knock-ons).   Even without Etzebeth and Malherbe, the Stormers tight 5 had the edge over the internationals making up the tight 5 of the Crusaders and the Chiefs - which should be a worry for the AB's in the RC this year.

Being fixated on the locks might be a symptom of what is wrong with Bok rugby. Good and effective rugby is not about one dimension or one position. Our locks are good enough given our general game plan.

The AB's have a good backline and loosies - their tight 5 as a unit is not up to standard.   In the Ellis Park test - the AB's got only 36% of possession from tight phases of the game and the fact that they beat the Springboks that day they can thank Morne Steyn and Alberts for - both useless in defense - and Morne's lack of decision making abilities  gifted the AB's a try they should never have scored.

Mike our "no up to standard" Tight 5 made Meyer sub Bismarck off didn't he?  He lost faith in him all of a sudden - it wasn't a planned sub becoz Bismarck kept loitering on the sideline . Pull the other finger Mike

Mike as I have said we have been the betterr side in 3 of the last 4 tests against the abs - an undeniable FACT.
I am just hoping our tight 5 doesnt become a tight 4 with the return of the show pony matfield as some hatters are punting.

Sure the NZ supporters are supporting the return of Matfield and Francois Steyn, as well as the retention of Morne Steyn,   The moment they support SA players for inclusion in the Springbok team the warning lights should be flashing - they would support those players that would be of help to the AB's and detrimental to the cause of the Springboks.

So Jake reckons Steph du Toit is one of the best players in the world and some clowns reckon Victor is still the man.....what a joke......Victor has been a passenger in every game he has played thus far.

PSDT is a huge loss
