Can anyone help fill in the gaps. Will be interesting to see, but what it looks like to me is SA lose far more players than NZ, and more concerning the SA players are leaving at a much younger age.

It is true that there are great names in there, and one would have loved to have seen them still playing in Sa, but at the expense of what? Who would they have been playing for? How many of them would have been warming the benches or playing for "lower" teams, because we are obsessed with every second youngster who shows talent. We want them to be playing Super Rugby the moment that they show promise.

 

I can never agree with that. Many of those promising youngsters end up injured and many of them get discarded again the moment the next promising youngster apears on the horizon.

 

I have seen many of those in that list play in the last few seasons and I can tell you that very few of them would not still make an impact at Super Rugby.

u need to remember that the NZRU dosent pick players based overseas, so if u want to be an All Black, u gotta be based in NZ, this is why the likes of rangers with three test caps, and fruean a fringe All Blacks and a whole plathorea of others stay as long as they do in NZ.

these are a few former All Blacks that i could come up with of the top of my head, if i was to go as far back as when rico gear first left though it would have been an even bigger All Black list, as gear left not long after not making the 2007 RWC squad which IMO was a huge mistake.
also of note is that i didnt select any non All Black players like sean maitland or thomas waldron, the list would have been even bigger and theres also question marks over rene ranger.
i think the trend in NZ tends to be, when they have done their All Black tour of duty, or if they relaise they will never be an incumbent, then they leave NZ shores to look for richer pastures, otherwise the All black dream keeps them around.

SA definately have way more younger players leaving then NZ, not sure of the reason why, but id think its mental and crazy that saffa orn and bred players like timo sweil and cj stander would rather play for other nations, england in timos case and ireland in cjs case. maybe growing up and watching the All blacks dominate the Boks had a negative effect on the young lads??? o_O
in which case beeno1 aka storminged, i apologise for the All blacks being the most dominant force in the world of rugby, :o)

that list is missing quite a few names....i am thinking of players like sowerby in the years gone by and co....it hurst to see players like poolman and stander at the young age of 24 based overseas and a player like josh strauss as well.

 

as i said SARU needs to really consider a move up north....just think of the pool of talent meyer and co would have been able to select if our local unions were in a competition structure much like the super rugby comp and the heineken cup. there would be less travel issues the jet lag would better for us as we are more alligned with europe....much much bigger sponsers would jump on board. the exchange rate would not really be a factor as we are competing on a level footing.

 

super rugby as it stand now does not benefit SA teams at all and the quicker we accept it the quicker we can build SA rugby up. talent was never a issue but we are being caught out by economics
