Yes ... he's not the most physical of players. Get's bullied a lot.
Purely there to secure us lineout ball.
Not much of a scrummager ... tries his best in the tight loose ... put's in his tackle and goes to ground every time ... never get's any go forward ... has a high work rate ... more like a bothersome fly than anything of note ...
I know exactly where your coming from.
I am a Lions fan ... have been all my life ... I can't tell you how many times I've prayed for a decent 5 lock to secure us ball ... or how many times I have had to watch my team lose because of a poor lineout.
It's a vital set piece to win because of all the attacking play coming from it.
That is the ONLY reason I'd keep Matfield in ... till a better all round 5 lock can be found.

Fine, but then you need to beef up the 7 and 3 as we need more physicality.

I've been calling for a change at 3 and 7 for awhile now so that suits me fine.
I also favour Alberts at 7 and would love to see Redelinghuys given a shot at 3.
Finish the loose trio off with Kriel coming in at 6.

CC
Matfield undermined Smit as cptain as well and ws sent back from NZ during the 2011 tour to New Zealand. I think it was him and not Jean who gave the instrutions to kick to the corner in the case of three penalties.
I know he is Meyer's blue-eyed person - but his captaincy will destory whatever chance we have in going into the WC next year. The same will happen that happened in the 2011 WC - we will not survive the quarter-final.
You have a very apt descriptionof Matfield - he is a bothersome fly. He is pushed aside out of mauls every time and is not effective in that phase of play. He cannot carry balls in traffic and if he tries he poes straight down and has given away penalties in such cases. He is easi;uy bu;;d by physiclly stronger opposing player. His tackles are weak and he missed a high percentage of them.
In essense he is a bothersome fly and non-effective in rugby sense. The man is an absolute waste of space on a rugby field and can only cause disaster for us next year in the WC.

My thoughts exactly......it is clear that Matfield is undermining Jean's leadership
