A year from now we will see a new Springbok coach if history is anything to go by.

SARU has never extended a Bok coaching contract past a world cup, could this be the first time?

Let's assume Meyer might have to submit his vision and plan alongside any other candidates who would you want?

Gary Gold has been assistant Springbok coach.

Allistair Coetzee has been assistant coach Springbok coach.

Rassie Erasmus is general manager for high performance teams at SARU

Nick Mallet has been out of coaching for some time.

Brendan Venter has been quite successful with Saracens and is now part of the Shark setup.

Johan Ackerman looks like one for the future, still maybe too inexperienced at the higher level

Might SARU go with an outsider such as John Plumtree or John Mitchell?

I doubt that, too much pride to appoint an overseas coach

I just hope whoever they appoint is not for political reasons and the guy wants to play positive rugby.

If you look at the talent available in South Africa, and considering the geriatrics will largely retire after what I expect to be a failure of a World Cup, the new coach if smart enough will be able to build a formidable team.

I doubt they'll get rid of Meyer ... but if they do, they'll probably go for Rassie or Venter.

They can already build a formidable squad. They just don't want to.

1. Rassie2. Mallet3. Venter
Ackerman may well be one to watch in the future, but you are right, he is still too green at coaching.

Johan Ackermann.

Can he be greener than the likes of Twakkie and Joke White, neither of whom had ever coached a Super Rugby team (and Joke hadn't even coached at Currie Cup level) when they got the job?

I'd like Mallett but I don't think he'd be interested.

Out of Rassie, Venter and Mallett, the only one who really achieved as a coach is Venter and that is not even at international level. There is a big hype about Venter and Saracens. Fact is that, in his time since the 2009/10 season, they have only won the Premiership once. That was in his first year. The next time they came close was last season when they lost to Northampton after losing the Heineken Cup final to Toulon. They never won the Heineken Cup and their only final was last year, and at that time, he was not even actively coaching any more.

What has Rassie achieved? Two Currie Cups and then he dropped the Cheetahs. just like he dropped the Stormers. Didn't he drop PDV as well?

Mallett was riding on the back of Ian Mac and Carel Du Plessis teams and the moment started "doing his own thing", the wheels came off and they came off so badly that he was fired. Italy also literally fired him. His only claim to fame was his 16 run win with "Carel DuP and Ian Mac's team" and his brief success with Stade Francais.

People can say what they want about Jake, he brought us a world cup! Yes we may have had an easy tournament, BUT he brought us a world cup! Also, don't forget the mess that Strauli left for him to sort out. And please, can we not compare Snor to any other coach we've ever had, because he never was a coach! HE was a joke!

Yes he did, Blue.

Arsehole or not ... he is a world cup winner.

Still ... think you can stomach another 4 years of "to be fair" comments?

Fok Please don't even think of that pretender, Rassie....he is not coaching material, fooled quite a few but has done nothing of note as a coach.

The truth is that apart from JW there is no-one but SARU won't have him so if I had to choose then it would be Johan Ackerman.

At RWC '11, the French team was in disarray with half the team not communicating with their coach, yet they came within a whisker of winning the tournament ........ some here say that SA competed, without a coach ! Maybe who's the boss aint that important after all .

There were similar rumours about England in the 2007 RWC. There were stories that Dallaglio, Catt, etc, more or less took over after their 36-0 loss against us.

The guy that is Ackerman's assistant is apparently the brains behind the scenes.......he is worth an assistant role in the Bok set up.

I'd be happy with a Kiwi as the coach

But of the local boys, in order it would have to be Mallett, Venter, Ackerman, Rassie

And there I was, thinking that you are quite intelligent. "Everybody" has already been named. The obvious "suspects" are always Venter, Mallett and Rassie. The rest cannot even be considered, as the OP suggests. The only "new flavour" is Johann Ackerman and I would be very careful. I will not, at this stage, say that he could (or could not) do the job. I would rather wait until he has had quite a number of seasons behind him. Remember Straeuli who got the job after one (was it?) good season with the Sharks?

Leave Ackerman alone.

He has much to learn and we need him to take us a step further.

That goes for Swys De Bruin too.

Hands off.

Who will be the next coach? Well, after a successful coach the politicians like to impose their pawns who'll implement their ethnic cleansing programs. So it will either be Coetzee or another black coach who they picked off the street but agreed to be a yes man.

In reality we only have Jake or Meyer. Of all first tier nations we have the worst coaches, as you go down to junior level it gets worse.

There are 4 possibilities:Rassie, Venter Mallet and Jake.
Cobus Visagie CA (SA) said of Rassie he has the finest rugby brain he has encountered. Many players have raved about him. A brilliant coach who coached Cheetahs while captaining the side - so highly was he regarded. What he did for the Cheetahs and WP speaks for itself. When he helped the Boks there was a big improvement immediately. Look at how we completely dominated OZ in that quarter final only losing to the worst display of reffing ever seen - dished out by kiwi brycy lawrenceLike Mallet before him Rassie couldnt take the rubbish dished out at WP and walked out.A tragedy for WP as the quota appointment Coetzee came in after flopping with the Boks. Next I would go for one of Venter or Mallet both of whom have good rugby brains. I may here be under valuing Jake who is a fine allround package.
If Meyer gets his squad right and plays a nice balanced game and wins RWC  I have no problem with him remaining. A RAWs loss would be taken into account as who knows we may face another bryce lawrence!!

Denny the bar has been rised and you will need a sound defence and the ability to score points as well.
You will definitely need a pack that can gain at least parity and it is here the pap wee abs could struggle. I note their once potent backline is being more easily handled and contained.

If we go for an international coach I would love to see John Mitchell.

If we go for a local coach I would Nick Mallet, but then chances for either of them is less than zero.

Not sure to be honest, I have never been able to listen to his rugby opinions, where as with John Mitchell I listen to him often.

I think Mitchell has a very astute mind when it comes to rugby, he understand the game but there does seem to be an issue with his management skills.

I think Eddie Jones would do a great job

He has the respect, and the player management skills that made him a great coach when he was with the Aussies.  I also think he was a tremendous help to Jake when he assisted him at the world cup.

I must say though Brendan Venter certainly made a name for himself at Saracens, so if it was a local coach I would go with Venter, as Mallet has had his chance, not too sure on Rassie, even though he has the best technical brain around. I remember the whole M allet debacle with the ticket prices where I think he was given quite a raw deal.

Mitchell has zero player management skills and that clearly came to the fore when he coached the Lions and most players wanted to walk.

Naka.... don't even go there

So if international, Eddie Jones, but local, Brendan Venter

I cannot remember Gert Smal being involved in "picking the best" recently. The last time he was a head coach, or in a similar position,  was when he was boo'ed off Newlands by the small-minded WP crowd. That was was more than nine years ago.

The above does not mean that I do not rate him. It is more aimed towards those clowns in the WP. Maybe they should have chosen him after the 2007 RWC instead of signing ou Suutjiespoep Coetzee.

No foreigner will successfully coach the Boks, Blacks or Oz. so we come down to a motley crew. Of those Ackerman was my pick for Bok lock for many years, but not for Bok coach. Rassie wouldn't last a year, too mentally unstable. Coetzee and Naka aren't creative enough.
Venter is the only smart, tough minded guy in the bunch. Better yet we keep HM and stop shooting ourselves in the foot.

The great College and professional dynasties  in football and in soccer, have emerged under coaches with longer tenure than 4 years.
