Why did the Springboks lose the test against the All Blacks - Opinion Poll

At present the outcomes of the Poll are as follows:-

The main reason for the Springboks' opening Rugby World Cup match defeat to the All Blacks was?

Vote captured.

15%    The referee!

21%     All Blacks are simply a better side

18%    Costly mistakes on defence

9%      Not enough potency on attack

37%    Kicked away too much possession

This is a countrywide poll with potential inputs from abroad.   The findings need to be individually itemized  since there has been given different version on site for the loss:-

Kicked away possession   (37%)

What is evident here is not only the kicking - but even more importantly the quality of the kicking as well as whether kicking was aimless or not.

Nobody can argue against the fact that kicking is an essential part of rugby.  The problem with SA Rugby for at least the past decade has been the following:-

*    The quality of kicking, 

*    Objective aim at putting the opposing team recipient under pressure to the benefit of the Springboks

*    Easy possession turnovers

*    Predictability

On site this issue was mentioned - but more as a side issue than not the major reason as indicated by most contributors to the poll.   

The AB's Just being a better team   (21%)

It is not necessarily the case.   What is the case is that the AB's is good in defense and much moire effective in utilizing opposition mistakes - like happened in the case of the two tries they scored, 

Costly mistakes on defense  (18%) 

There will always b missed tackles in games - but the norm should be too limit those to a maximum of roundabout 15 to 18% of the tackle attempts.  In the game on Saturday the situation was a s follows:-

*    Tackles made     -      106

*    Tackles missed   -        35

*    Missed tackle ratio      33.01

That is obviously twice as high as it should be and a very real problem for the Springboks

So lets look at the worst defenders on the day:-

*   Vermeulen           -    1 tackle made -   3  tackles missed   -    MTR   75%

*   Jantjies               -    2 tackles made -  2 missed               -    MTR   50%

*   Am                     -    5 tackles made  - 3 missed               -    MTR   37.67%

*   De KLerk            -     8 tackles made  - 4 missed               -    MTR   33,34%

*   Mostert               -   10 Tackles made - 4 missed               -    MTR   28,47%

*   Kolisi                  -    8 Tackles made  - 3 missed               -    MTR   27,27%

*   Du Toit               -   13 Tackles made -  3 missed              -    MTR   18,75%

If 7 of the 23 players contributed 22 of the missed tackles out of 35 there is something seriously defective in defense by 6 of the 7 players mentioned.  What is especially bad is that two players in the high tackle problem area missed tackles leading to the two tries scored.

Referee Deficiency  (16%)

Already discussed comprehensively on site.

Not enough Potency on Attack    (9%)   

Most of our members on site mentioned this problem - but the large majority of people think it is one of the lesser problems.  Part of the problem relates to handling errors - but in the case of the site members the argument in the main relates to certain players getting blamed all the time by certain members of being deficient.   

They didn't work out what the allblacks would do to counter their rush defence.

The truth of it all is that none of the above points are at the heart of the problem.

We don't want to look at the truth. It's politically incorrect to face it head-on ... and so we make things up to detract from what the actual cause is.

We go out of our way to avoid the real issues ... we pretend ... we play games ... we lie to each other ... and to ourselves ... we make excuses ... and justify it all by trying to be the nice guy.

The truth of it all is that Rassie selected a second rate squad riddled with quotas ... incompetent third rate rugby players of colour ... that have no business on a test pitch.

He also allowed his friendship with some players to cloud his judgement. Franscois Louw, Frans Steyn, Thumbalina Vermeulen, Beast and Schalk Brits are all waaaaaaaaay past their best and have been for at least 5 years. I see Schalk Brits has been made captain ... again ... see what I mean?

Let's face it ... none of these boys belong there. They are on holiday. They have been invited to see the sights , to enjoy the culture and to partake of the cuisine. We all saw how poor they were on Saturday ... pretending rugby. A last hoorah before they retire.

The deserving are all at home watching this fiasco. Guys like Akker, Dylan Smith and Jaco Kriel ... but to mention a few.

Posters like the deluded Mozart and the totally confused Denny will sing the Goats praises tomorrow after they destroy the Namibians. Then we're suddenly world beaters again ... and Rassie is the best thing to come out since sliced bread.

Let us not deluded ourselves any further with bullshit stories ... and let us stop blaming the ref for all our short comings.  

If we selected our best players we would have had a much better shot at defeating a depleted All Black side. They aren't at their best and still they thumped us by 10.

There you have it. The truth.

Forget about these polls. They ignore the issues and are designed to confuse your already deluded state even further.

If you look at the above the issue of quota selections are part of the problem - but not the main problem.   Vermeulen and Mostert were both extremely poor defenders and they are not quota selections.  You are right when you mention some players that should not be in the squad - but the situation is still miles better than what it was in the 2015 WC when 8 of the players in the squad were unplayable and 9 was marginal.

AO or Liza Page3 I called him lately was always clueless.   The following is clueless as well:-

The AB' did nothing about the rush defense - both their tries came from errors made by the Springboks and poor defense by two players.  It had zero to do with rush defense.

I have just watched the match against the All Blacks again.

Nobody mentioned the high tackles Etzebeth put in and got away with.

Why is that?

Nobody spoke of how many times the Goats were off side with their rush defense ... and got away with it.

How come?

Nobody mentioned how many times our tight head prop would bind on Moodies arm and pull his elbow down.

No body mentioned how Faff and Pollard would kick balls aimlessly away to such an extend that we weren't able to contest our own kicks.

Wee cc the quota selections are in the coaching staff. Kolisi should not be captain. 

But other than that the quota issue is not as great as it was. 

There are no disaster picks. There are some questionable pick and yes Akkers is one of those who should be in the squad.

One kick at goal hit the post. One bad pass stopped Kolbe scoring. Turn that around and it's a draw. Boks won second half and won the territory and possession battle.

The AB's countered the rush defence by constantly box kicking to a Bok defence that was sus under the high ball and pinning them back in their own half and kicking out wide to the wings away from the rush defence ...Richie kicked the perfect cross kick to Reece and they scored from it..even SBW tried the kicking game twice (which he never ever does) to widen the attack. I was reading a post mortem from the Bok POV and they said they didn't read the AB game plan to counter their rush defence at all and concluded that won't happen again if the two teams meet again.

It seems that you are from New Zealand - so not the despicable AO.   Yes you have indeed a point about the box kicking - that was an effective measure,  but then the Springboks were very weak in fielding any kicks - but it does have a negative and may not work against other teams - especially the NH teams.
