Although I enjoy the spectacle of the world cup I don't care much for it. Coaches focus far too much on a window that is six weeks long and put their measure of success all on an event that happens once every four years.
This debilitates them in the sense that they are afraid to simply build a team of the most talented players available to them.
If there was no world cup we would not see coaches hold back on player development and there would be constant evolution of teams.
Pieter de Villiers hung onto players he shouldn't have, and those players he hung on to couldn't adapt when the laws changed the game in 2010, those guys lost us the RWC quarter final because they were too hardheaded to adapt.
The exact same thing is happening again under Meyer.
Plus when you look at the controversy around teams winning or being eliminated it sours the tournament.
We must forever hear about the 1995 RWC and the 2007 exit of the All Blacks, whether it is poisoning, golden watches to Derek Bevan in 1995 or Wayne Barnes in 2007.
THen there is Bryce Lawrence and Craig Joubert in 2011.
For me the RWC shine is gone and there is too much negative fallouts because of it.
Luck plays a major part in it, the draws are not done correctly according to rankings etc.

Give me a good old fashioned All Blacks or British Lions 4 test match tour, complete with Saturday games against the top provinces when it's not a test match weekend and midweek dirt-tracker games against the smaller teams and invitation XVs any old day.
I'd trade the overrated RWC, the predictable RC and the potentially good but ruined Super Rugby all for just one old fashioned tour every 4 years or so.

I would say most Kiwis ,on here at least are over 1995 and 2007 .Old history not worth worrying about except when trotted out to needle us and some think a riposte is needed .Not me though I coudlnt give a monkeys you won em end of story .Like 2011 and 1987 are ours , thats all there is to that .I like how the ABS give the 4 years of test rugby in between its fair due .I think I enjoy the BIL tours slightly more too but that may have to do with rarity .

I know you guys are saying it's not the blueprint of rugby...each to one's own but it has another dimension... it's emotional and uplifting especially for those minnow counties that come into the arena.
My personal attitude is respect for every nation, big or small that enters this arena...especially the minnows that fight odds greater than mere matches...sometimes and most times it seems futile but the guts and determination and belief is awe inspiring to say the least...Rome was never built in a day...Humble beginnings lead to huge achievements and long after I'm gone the small nations will rise.

I hate the way the holder of the RWC is called "The World Champions" for 4 years until the next tournament. They're not World Champions for that length of time, they won a world tournament on a given day and that's all! How many of the Champions have then gone on and been good the next season?....not a lot and you're only as good as your last game.If I had it my way the RWC would be restricted to the top 8 nations who would play a full round robin of matches and then have semis and a final. That way you could say you've played ALL the best teams and came out on top. Even then you could still lose your next game!!Bring back the tours!!

Ol'Mike and Mozart won't be around...mourne even Rooinek died from alcoholic poisoning (a metal tap erected by the in keeper in his favourite corner in A Johannesburg pub) actually, I might still be around... me grandad was 99.5 years when he fell asleep and never a'risen.
