There is no hiding in a world cup, many tier one teams get pushed around and have to fight their way out. I never believed in this team and felt that he only selected players on reputation and the people that he works with. Here are the things that I have always disagreed with meyer.
  1. Players - You don't need to have the most experience team as it counts for nothing when the players are not in a physical condition or proven their worth. Meyer has selected a number of past players that he has worked with and believed that he can rock up and just play his way into form through the tournament. He has created more damage to SA rugby that Pieter De Villiers in doing so. He had four years to work with super rugby coaches to bring through talent in key positions. As a coach you are aloud 1 bad year to get things into place but not in a world cup year. Matfield, De Villiers, Alberts, Louw etc should never have been selected
  2. Competition - There is absolutely no competition for places in the team. As shown with some of his favourites that they really let us down.
  3. Match fitness, It is a contact sport, you can not cotton wool players. Injuries is part of the game. England, Ireland NZ have all been playing games right up to 2 weeks before kick-off. The boks have not played for 2 months, adding another 5 players that have not played for more than 5 hours this year.
  4. Tactics - Meyer has always been predictable, he plans so far ahead and we have seen how many times he has thrown games away by bringing on subs on at the wrong because its in his game plan. The boks through away a massive lead against Australia this year away from home.
  5. Coaching team - When Meyer was selected he pretty much cleared out the entire bulls coaching staff and have stuck with them. He should have found the best coaches in SA. You have guys like Johan Ackerman that are working wonders for the lions. Matthew Proudfood that has transformed the stormers scrum and it is no wonder the that they have produced players like Estebeth, Kitshoff, Malherbe, Kolisi etc. Then you had Jacques Nienaber that created the best defensive team in super rugby with much smaller players.
  6. Conditioning - What the hell is he doing. If you think of all the players that were injured up to the world cup. Vermeulen, Neck, Coenie, Du Preez, De Villiers, Alberts, Pieter Steph, Louw. 8 players that have not had enough time to regainform.

In a nutshell Meyer chose to work with what he knows and didn't create an environment for the elite of sa rugby to participate in, both coaches and players.

Good points Corn apart form 6. The solution is central contracting where elite players can be properly managed. You can also use this to load franchises etc ala NZ.

You are spot on.   Elsewhere I wrote about how Jones out-smarted the Springboks.  Not hard to do that at all - what you \said fit in with my comments in that case as well.  I would just add one point to your excellent summary, namely -
7  The stampkar kick and chase game plan years ago discarded by other countries -  but retained by Meyer - destroys backline play and hands over precious ball possession to the opposition through aimless kicks.

Not on point sadly. The biggest failures were giving in to the fans. All of his dud selections have been fan favourites. Dropping the reliable de Jongh for JJ cost us, selecting Goosen cost us, so too Lambie, Reinach, Steph, Damian, Taute, Mvovo, all those props, Vermaak, Jantjies, the list is seemingly endless. Meyer sifted through many players, far more than Peter and even Staeuli and Viljoen. In part because this is the weakest generation of players we have had for quite some time and in part because he did not have the courage to do what he knew was right. In the face of adversity he dismantled his hugely successful power team in favour of a flawed running game because that was the flavour of the day by the pseudo fans.
Michael, what kick and chase game plan? The Boks haven't played a fundamentally tactical kicking game since 2012.

 Desert Disaster
You are clueless now are you not.  We are playing the previous generation at this stage and they have become too weak to compete.   So what the hell are you talking about?  If we were playing the p resent generation of players we would have been much more competitive.

we are playing a inferior game pattern and with the type of personal that is at the rwc its impossible to change it now.
we might scrape through to the qf but this is a great opportunity to rope in a international coach....hopefully a nz born coach...sadly there is no local coach that can change the mindset we have and we need that exposure to change our ways

It would not help to bring in anyone.  The players selected by Meyer is so set in their ways - the ways of a decade ago to be able to adjust - they would not be able to implement anything new at this stage of their career.

 as always mike your right.
as much as it pains me. i still think this was a proper wake up call for sa rugby and we can finally see the end of this mindless drone rugby.
its obvious we need to change our game pattern.

If you took out 3 of Meyers favourites you would lose 300 caps. Everybody spoke about the experience but that would leave us with far less experience.
I also believe that the foreign players hardly add any value. Pick local with a few exceptions. Let the players push each other.

Sadly it is custom in South Africa to promote people to positions beyond their capability.
It goes back to 1948 when you know who took over the country.
Just  look what they did to the country and now Meyer is doing the same to SA rugby.
Shame, shame, shame.
