Oh balls. This was a game won off Stormers penalties and yellow cards. Their tries came from the traditional Bools mauls.

The Bulls backs looked solid, and the forwards are improving. I was not very impressed with the Bulls scrumhalf. Papier seems much faster to the base of the ruck. At one moment I thought he was Hougaard, but need to see more of him.

The Bools are now competently prepared:
Much better scrum
Much, much better at the breakdown
Much, much, much faster push defence.
And Mitchell has preserved traditional Bools mauling....and excellent kicking Pollard. All that is missing from the old formula is the lineout dominance of a Matfield and the in the air dominance of Basson.
What I am not seeing is the NZ game plan we were promissed. This is not a significant departure from the Stormers/Sharks and still miles behind last year's Lions in terms of ball handling.

Actually it was the refs fault that the Canes lost. Mitchell is doing nothing the three other SA coaches aren't doing....he does, however, have the new toy syndrome working for him.
It's similar to getting a new driver and finding 10 extra metres, which slowly disappear over time. The Bools are playing with test level energy at the moment. It wont last as it becomes apparent that it's all just a pipe dream.

The Bulls are playing good rugby. I would rather see them lose games if it means they are developing their game plan and skills. If the Bulls can recruit a few more players in key positions they are going to get better next season.

Nothing that the Bools are doing is even close to the 2017 Lions in terms of sophisticated ball handling.
