I did not see whether he was injured at all while playing - and was really not surprised when it did happen.   There was no report of an injury of Steyn in any media reports I have seen thus far of the game.

I think Meyer saw serious and worrying signs of under-performance and consequently subbed him early,  since he just could not afford a repeat of his Ellis Park disastrous  performance.  The deficiencies were  -

*  aimless kicking that gave the Welsh opportunities to counter-attack and put the Springboks under pressure; and

*  serious defence problems when Welsh players ran past him without even an attempt to tackle them and in the two cases where he did attempt tackles he missed an easy one as well.

Unless he was in fact injured - the signs are that yesterday was the last test Morne wi ll play for SA.

According to Rugby 365 he was injured in the 18 minute.
"The opening quarter saw some scintillating and clinical play by the visitors but they lost their way when Morné Steyn departed through injury in the 18th minute.

With Steyn off, the Springboks’ lacked the accuracy their strategy demanded and therefore relied on brute strength and physicality to grind out a victory over the Six Nations champions.

While Steyn’s injury - and Pat Lambie’s poor performance after shifting from No.15 to flyhalf - will be causes of concern, the performances of the likes of Fourie du Preez, Jean de Villiers, Willem Alberts and debutant Frans Malherbe were all positives for South Africa to take out of the game."

Supersport also have an article on this. A back spasm. Dont just jump to conclusions Mike. That tackle attempt had us all pulling out our hair. Lambie's game management and execution was poor though. He defended well and made some telling runs where the lack of support wasnt his fault. Overall though a dissappointment to me who would also like to see a viable replacement to Morne asap

Morne again was defensively pathetic.....I was very relieved to see Lambie replace him at 10 and having Willie at 15.......thankfully with this change we managed to hold out for the win.

Had Morne stayed at 10, we would have in all likelihood lost the game - he is that poor these days.

Lets hope we dont see Morne on the field again all tour

from what I saw, Morne Steyn tackled a Welsh forward on the Welsh 22 head on and chest high and then he crumbled in a heap. He may have had a sternal blow with possible injuries to his sternum and ribs.

Sure - there was no clear evidence of any injury - so I was wrong from that perspective - the poor dear had a back spasm and during the game had a twitch in the back - so I was wrong.

However, that does not take away from the fact that Morne was piss poor at Ellis Park and nothing better on Saturday.

The muscles in your back are large. You have the Trapezius (two inverted triangles) and Latissimus (triangular on either side, tying into your anterior deltoid from your lower back! ) taking up nearly all of the back with large muscle groups underneath them. Your lattissimus of course being very important in executing the pressing movement - ask anyone who understands how to bench press properly. In short, a back spasm is a serious problem. Had you to experience one I'm certain you would be crying out for morphine. It was to his credit that he outshone Lambie with a back injury, but you are too dishonest to admit it.

McCaw doesn't play long enough nowadays, get time to develop back spasms. He had an operation at the end of 2011, then only re-appeared in the 2012 S15 semi-finals and then took a sabbatical again.
